Chrome Divas come to Des Moines

I’ve been keeping this under my helmet for awhile, but am so excited to finally be able to mention that the CHROME DIVAS have come to Des Moines – and that I am a founding member!

While poking around on the Web one night last summer I did some reading about this organization for women motorcycle enthusiasts, founded in 2002. I was surprised to learn that although there was a very large and active chapter in the Cedar Rapids area, there was not yet a chapter here in Des Moines.

So, together with my gal pals Shirley, Susan (Coyote) and Stephanie (Iowa Harley Girl), we launched the Chrome Divas of Des Moines in August 2011. We’ve added two additional members since then – Janet (“Seven Over”) and Penney (“One Cent”).

The Chrome Divas is simply an organization for women who share a passion for motorcycles – all brands, all levels of riding. We currently meet monthly, and we’ll be creating opportunities to ride together and work on behalf of some our favorite community organizations. Our primary mission is four-fold:

  • Promote a positive image of women who ride, and of motorcycling in general.
  • Provide a social atmosphere for women who ride or simply love motorcycles to gather and get to know each other.
  • Give back to our community by participating in local non-profit events and activities.
  • Ride and have fun!

We’re lucky and thankful to have Sambetti’s, a local bar and grill, as the “official home of the Chrome Divas of Des Moines.” A big THANK YOU to Paul Strome, owner of Sambetti’s, for his encouragement and support of our little group!  (I personally recommend the “10 oz top” special, the chicken strips, the house dressing on the crisp, cold salads, and – OMG – the ONION RINGS!! Lunch, dinner or drinks – Sambetti’s is one of my favorite spots in Des Moines!)

As for membership, right now we’re keeping growth slow and purposeful so as not to get too big too fast, but we are excited about being part of this great organization and are definitely planning to increase our numbers!

James will continue to work hard on recovery and will re-evaluate is injuries and race readiness before Houston. But for now he is not ready to compete at the level required. “’I wouldn’t be able push myself at the pace needed to run with the guys out there”

Freedom Rock Ride 2012

I recently had a few days off from work and the days were sunny so I was determined to get at least a couple of good day-rides in. Steve had been wanting to get out to see the 2012 mural on the Freedom Rock, so Greenfield was our first destination along with Shirley, Garry, Dave R., Kristin and Teri Ann.

It was going to be another very hot day, so even though Greenfield and the Rock are only about 60 miles away, we planned a stop halfway. We took off along SW 9th Street in Des Moines, which quickly becomes County Road R63 heading south, and turned west at Highway 92. In the past we’ve stopped frequently at the Casey’s General Store that sits a hundred feet from the junction of 92 and 169 at Winterset, and such was my plan here again – but, upon making the left turn off 92 I quickly realized that the familiar building was gone and the site was under re-construction. Thank goodness this is Iowa, and there is always another Casey’s!

After a brief stop to “stretch and hydrate” (as my former boss used to say), we took off again to the west – traveled the 24 miles to Greenfield along 92, then north another 12 miles along Highway 25 to the Freedom Rock – so named because local artist Ray Sorensen paints a new military-themed mural on the rock every year. This year’s Rock recognizes the Tomb of the Unknowns, US Naval Petty Officer Taylor Morris, the POW experience, and Iowa’s Sullivan Brothers.

The Rock has become a destination for bikers, veterans, and other military supporters from around the country. There is a contingent of bikers that now stops here each year while en route from the west coast to the Viet Nam memorial in Washington, D.C. just before Memorial Day.

While at the Rock we encountered an older gentleman who was also visiting – turns out he is a Greenfield area resident and also a WWII veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor. He said he visits the rock frequently to chat with the people who come to see it.

We also met a fellow rider – a gal named Michele who had come down on a solo ride from her home in Story City. She gave us a terrific gift – a group photo that included ALL of us (rather than the usual “all minus the photographer”). It was neat to chat with her there at the Rock, and we invited her to head north with us to our next stop at Guthrie Center.

We left the Rock and headed north along Highway 25, which took us into Guthrie Center and yes, another Casey’s. This was the same location where we’d stopped in 2006 and met the woman whose dad helped trowel Albert the Bull over in Audubon.

Visited a little more with Michele here, and finalized our route home. She traveled a few miles east with us to Panora, where we waved a farewell and turned to the south on County Road P28. We picked up F59 a few miles outside of Panora, then F60 outside of Redfield, and stopped again for a final stretch-and-hydrate at Adel. We picked up Highway 6 going east out of Adel, and took that all the way into Des Moines. It’s funny that this used to be a very rural drive. Now, after decades of record growth westward from Des Moines, it’s a short 7 mile path from Adel to Waukee and then 100 percent developed from Waukee clear through to the far east side of the Des Moines area. So we’re now “back in town” even though we are riding through a town that used to be considered “out in the boondocks.”

In all we traveled 150 miles and were pretty well roasted by the time we got home (I was going to say we were “baked,” but I think that might mean something else!), but it was certainly a great way to spend a vacation day!

Death of Georges Jobé, former FIM Motocross World Champion

Belgian rider Georges Jobé passed away last Wednesday 19 December, aged 51. He won two FIM 250cc Motocross World Championship titles in 1980 and 1983, and three 500cc titles in 1987, 1991 and 1992. He was also member of the Belgian team winner of both the Motocross des Nations and the Trophée des Nations in 1980.Born on 6 January 1961, Georges Jobé is part of the Belgian Motocross Legend with the many riders who made this small European country on the top of the Motocross world. He started in the World Championship in 1979, aged 18. 1980 was his year, in which he went directly at the top, winning the 250cc Championship riding a factory 250 RM Suzuki, the Motocross des Nations and the Trophée des Nations for the Belgian team, all this aged 19. Things went not so good as foreseen afterwards, however. He lost the 1981 title against British rider Neil Hudson by two points, and the 1982 one against American Danny Laporte after suffering a couple injuries. He finally got his second title in 1983, and went to the 500cc class. It took him a couple of years of fights to reach his goal: first title in 1987. He then tried to clinch the 125cc title in order to have a world crown in each of the three MX classes, but he didn't succeed. Back in the 500cc, he won two other titles in 1991 and 1992. He suffered many injuries during his career and also after leaving the tracks, but he always stayed in the sport, working for KTM during some years. He fought during a long time against health problems, until the end.FIM President Vito Ippolito and all the FIM members extend their sincere condolences to his family and friends.Captions from top to bottom:1 - André Malherbe & Georges Jobé - FIM Archive2 - Georges Jobé - Youthstream3 - Georges Jobé (Left), Max Biaggi (Centre) & Giovanni Sala (Right) in Sestrière (ITA) in 2000 - FIM Archive

Josh Sheehan triumphs in World Championship finale

All hell broke loose on Saturday in Bulgaria's capital Sofia as the freestyle motocross riders came together in the Armeec Arena for the final competition in this year's NIGHT of the JUMPS / FIM Freestyle MX World Championship series. The FMX riders fought it out for the last time this year in front of more than 9,000 fans. Twelve riders from seven nations went head to head in qualifying. Moore was back on the World Championship circuit for the first time in ages. Unbelievable but true, the Australian did not make it through to the finale (#7), despite producing 360 and Volt on the Run. Hannes Ackermann (Germany), Brice Izzo (France), Petr Pilat (Czech Republic) and Jose Miralles (Spain) suffered the same fate, even though they also achieved good runs in qualifying. Only Bianconcini (Italy) totally blotted his copy book, ruining his chances of a place in the final with a dead sailor. Rankings were introduced for the first time ever in the NIGHT of the JUMPS this 2012 for Maxxis Highest Air contest. Bianconcini dominated the competition, securing 10 out of 12 victories on the day and a TAG Heuer winner's watch. However, Maikel Melero beat him in Sofia by 20 centimetres. Luc Ackermann, who is only 14 years old, also beat Bianco this year, winning in Basel. His recompense, number two slot on Maxxis Highest Air podium at the close of the season. The motocrossers once again dug deep into their repertoire of tricks in the final contest of the year. David Rinaldo executed a Double Seatgrab Flip, but even that was only enough for sixth place. Maikel Melero performed the same trick on his run, but with more style, to finish fifth. After his barrage of tricks, Javier 'Psy' Villegas did the Gangnam Style, which certainly impressed the fans but not the members of the jury, who placed him fourth. Podmol (Czech Republic) took the top spot in qualifying, but could not repeat his form in the final, finishing third. Josh Sheehan and Remi Bizouard traded tricks for ultimate victory. The Frenchman pulled off Ruler Flip, Cliffhanger Flip and Hart Attack Flip. Australian rider Sheehan replied with Lazy Flip, Tsunami Flip Indy and 360 to finally triumph in the skies of Sofia with a three-point lead. And so, a spectacular season dominated by the formidable Remi Bizouard came to an end. He certainly deserves this third world championship title. Libor Podmol took second place from David Rinaldo, who finished third overall. NIGHT of the JUMPS wishes fans everywhere a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Riders will be in Linz / Austria for the season opener of the 2013 NIGHT of the JUMPS in just four weeks time. Results NIGHT of the JUMPs – Final 1. Josh SheehanAUSMA Honda406 Points 2. KTM announces Coma unable to ride in Dakar 2013

KTM, the brand whose factory teams and bikes have sealed eleven consecutive Dakar Rally victories announced in a press conference in Barcelona on Friday that one of its key riders, Spaniard Marc Coma will be unable to ride in the 2013 edition of the world's most famous rally. Coma, who injured his shoulder in an accident in the Morocco Rally in October is not completely fit. The team has therefore decided he should not tackle the event that involves more than 8000 km of perilous riding over the world's toughest offroad terrain through Peru, Argentina and Chile. "Marc is one of our key riders and together with his teammate Cyril Despres has giving KTM the last seven Dakar titles. While we are disappointed that he is unable to ride, the health and welfare of our factory riders is the most important consideration. If he is not 100 percent fit, it is better for him to sit out the 2013 rally," said KTM factory team manager Alex Doringer. Coma, winner of three Dakar titles and the reigning World Cross Country World Championship is, together with his teammate Despres, recognized as one of the world's finest exponents of rally sport. A deeply disappointed Coma spoke after the press conference saying: "We worked really hard with the doctors and the physiotherapists right up until the last minute but we have to be realistic. One of the muscles in my shoulder is still giving me problems and there is a lack of movement. This is the logical consequence and we must be honest and clear about the situation." Coma, who will now concentrate his efforts on regaining complete fitness ahead of the rest of the 2013 season and looking forward to the Dakar 2014 said he was sad for the team but underlined that the Dakar is a 'winning project' for KTM so there was no alternative than to make this announcement. Team manager Alex Doringer said he hoped Marc would be at the start in Lima to wish the team well and see them launch their attack.
Doringer underlined that in view of the high profile that the Dakar Rally has for KTM, that the company had always taken the precaution of having a reserve rider registered with the Dakar organizers, ASO. He said they had now given the green light for the accredited reserve rider to step in and ride Coma's KTM 450 Rally bike. "We always took the precaution to have a reserve rider properly registered in case of such circumstances and it will be KTM USA's Kurt Caselli who will step in to ride Coma's bike. We want him to ride the Dakar without any pressure, embrace the adventure and learn from the experience," Doringer said. Caselli is at the forefront of the US offroad scene and is the current AMA National Hare and Hound Champion. He is a multiple national title winner in premium US offroad events, has been a stalwart in the US International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) Championship and was a member of the KTM team that recently finished second in the 2012 edition of the legendary Baja 1000. Caselli's start number is yet to be confirmed. Kurt Caselli: "It has always been a goal in my career to compete in the Dakar. There would be no way possible for me to achieve this without the ongoing support of KTM. To be able to race the greatest off road race in the world aboard the best bike in the world is truly a blessing. This is not only a milestone in my career but also in my life."Communication KTM Racing News -www.ktm.com-

Traversing Flat Corners

One of the great things about a worn down track is the help from ruts and berms.  Sure they can make things difficult, but they essentially help us keep our speed up in the corners.  Just like in NASCAR, the angled surface allows the bike to lean over and still find plenty of traction.  However, there are situations where you don’t always have this luxury and you must bring out your inner flat tracker.

Since you don’t have any help with your leaning, the entrance needs to be a little bit different.  When approaching the corner, take a wider approach than you normally would.  If you have ever watched any kind road racing, drives use wide lines that are smooth arcs.  Traction is very important here, so you want to get all of your braking done before you start to lean in.  When you are upright, the tires have the most bite for better braking.  Just like normal turns, you want to be in the attack position and keep looking ahead.

When it comes time to sit down, remember that this is one, fluid motion: get off the brakes, sit up on the gas cap, leg out and apply the throttle.  The smoother you are, the easier the corner will be.  Sitting up close to the gas cap will put as much weight on the front wheel as possible for optimal traction which will give you some confidence when you lean in.  The best way to sit is on the outside edge of the seat.  This keeps your weight centered and straight down, rather than out and away.

The basics really play a big role in this situation.  That outside elbow better be up and the outside peg should be weight.  Again, this puts more emphasis on traction.  If you feel that the rear wants to drift out still, you can drag the rear brake to weight the back end down.  This is a great technique to use on the exit when power is put to the ground.  However, if you have a steady throttle hand, you won’t need to use this as often.

Drifting out too wide can leave the door open for a pass.  Keeping your elbow up and weight on the outside peg gives you the traction to power through the turn and avoid drifting out.  Unlike riding through a wide arc, squaring up flat turns robs momentum and drive.  It is time consuming and a waste of energy.  Once you find that balance between leaning and twisting the throttle, these corners become excellent passing opportunities.

Uncensored Update with Derek Garland and Jacko Strong

Before warming up and putting in a ride at the Compound, Garland and Jacko went question for question for an uncensored update.

jacko garland Uncensored Update with Derek Garland and Jacko Strong

JACKO: So Garland, how are you today?

GLAND: Doing great bud. Getting ready for a great practice sesh here at the Compound.

JACKO: Alright sounds good… Now let’s get into the serious stuff. You’ve got to marry one, bang one, and kill one. We’ve got Shane’s wife, Jimmy Fitzpatrick, and Jimmy Hill’s sister. The noble thing to do would be to kill Shane’s wife.

gland 300x168 Uncensored Update with Derek Garland and Jacko StrongGLAND: Yeah, I’d have to. Sorry Shane, it’s the most reasonable thing to do. As for Hill’s sister, I’ve never met her but he has that long hair so I don’t know.
JACKO: So answer the question… are you gonna bang Hill’s sister?
GLAND: Yeah.
JACKO: Looks like your’e marrying Fitzpatrick. Your fucked! So what’s your plan for 2013?

GLAND: 2013.. Nuclear Cowboys is kicking off we will see what the rest of the year brings with some demos or tours. I don’t know… we’ll see if the worlds still standing after 12/21/12… that’s the end of the world apparently.

JACKO: Fuck… Looks like I’m going on a bender! I never even knew. I thought that was next year. Well we shouldn’t plan too far ahead. I guess we will just worry about then. How’s the love life?

GLAND: It’s good… girlfriend.

JACKO: That’s a slippery slope.

GLAND: How about you? Whats new in the world of Jacko Strong?

sled Uncensored Update with Derek Garland and Jacko Strong

JACKO: Not much really… I am now a professional sled rider. Freestyle is just a hobby now. Welcome to Australia, we have a bobsled team. Let’s talk about the beard because the beard is coming back… Who is ready for a beard ride?

GLAND: The beard was around for about 3 years, and then went away and now it’s coming back.

JACKO: It’s gone, you got a chick.. You’re like “she aint’ leaving me now” so you’re gonna grow it again.

GLAND: Exactly.

Garlandbeard Uncensored Update with Derek Garland and Jacko Strong

JACKO: Do girls hate beards? I know chicks are absolutely repulsed by mullets. Fuck.. every single girl that sees you with a mullet just turns their nose up at you. So you gotta go with a beard.

GLAND: Yeah. A beard is kind of a hit or miss. They either love it or hate it… and I guess there’s some indifferent ones.

JACKO: Do you ever get any chicks that come up to you and ask you if they can sit on your beard?

GLAND: Of course… Especially in the Midwest you know. They like it out there. I think back in the day a lot of the men had beards, and I think some of the girls still like that I think.

JACKO: Yeah, it makes you feel like the alpha male. If I could grow a beard I would have one… I’ll put it that way.

GLAND: Working on any new tricks?

JACKO: We have Summer X Games coming next year so just training for best trick. The pressures on, I have to quit drinking beers and start thinking it’s that time of year again. I don’t know, after the whole winter things over I’ve got a couple of ideas and a couple of tricks that I’ve already done in my foam pit in Australia. So I’ll be back the 9-5 grind trying to figure it out. Putting the time in. How about you… How’s that boat going? Have you had any boats and hoes episodes yet?

jackox Uncensored Update with Derek Garland and Jacko Strong

GLAND: The boat is good it still floats… I’ve had a couple of issues of water in some of the compartments.

JACKO: They make a pump for that, don’t they?

GLAND: Yeah it’s all good… It happens. But yeah, maybe some big adventures, maybe Catalina, maybe Hawaii… who knows.

IMG 0938 Uncensored Update with Derek Garland and Jacko Strong

JACKO: Do you think Australia might be in the sights? Pack the bike and storm the streets to my pad?

GLAND: I think so… I think it’s definitely do-able with a 27 ft. boat. I think I’ll either make it or I won’t… but it will be a fun adventure.

JACKO: Sounds good. Well then you can do that one first on your own.

GLAND: Yea, ill meet you there.

JACKO: 10-4 rubber ducky over and out.

Ride to eat: Williamson

In addition to the graduation and Memorial Day activities we enjoyed this past weekend, we also managed to squeeze in a ride. (I actually squeezed in a solo ride, too.) On Saturday, we took off on a short “ride to eat” trip with Garry and Shirley to the tiny town of Williamson, Iowa.

This trip took us southeast along Highway 5 out of Carlisle to County Road S45, which we took south through Melcher-Dallas, then a short jog on State Highway 14 and in to Williamson.

At our destination, lunch at the Williamson Tavern was large and cheap – it was also the only thing to do in this tiny town of under 200 people. The view from the main road in either direction is testimony to the “sleepiness” of this little place, which is still three times bigger than Millerton! (Garry & Shirley also ended up buying us lunch – what Williamson lacks in venues it also lacks in ATM’s. Thanks guys, next time we’ll try to remember to bring cash!)

After lunch we headed back out along the same route, but stopped in Melcher-Dallas for a couple of pictures. We had detoured through this hyphenated town on our way down (instead of passing right by), and I wanted to go back and catch pictures of a bridge and a mural.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find any information about either of these local features. My “keen eye for the obvious” tells me the bridge is very old, given the weathered boards showing through under the top layer of asphalt. It arches over train tracks that run parallel to the highway. Heading into town isn’t as tricky as heading back out – the bridge dumps you right at the highway with a very short approach and a sharp downhill slope.

The other photo opp was this really neat mural painted on the back wall of the Melcher-Dallas Coal Mining Heritage Museum. A small landscaped seating area provides space to enjoy the artwork, which is signed simply “D.E. Adams, ’98.”

I posted more pictures from this ride on the BCN Facebook Page.

After taking my pictures we headed home along a route that included G76 west and S23 north. We did have one near-incident along S23 – I spotted what I thought was roadkill in the middle of the road up ahead, but quickly figured out that it was actually moving (walking) right to left. Uncertain whether it was something that could quickly reverse course, I slowed way down and went around it on the right – turned out to be a large turtle – my friends followed, but not before riding up on each other a bit too quickly. Of course I didn’t see this happening behind me, but I learned later that by slowing I had almost caused them to wreck in the back. Not good!

This, plus another near-incident on my solo Monday ride and my recent bike drop in the garage, have sort of caused me to wonder if I’m “off my feed” this year for some reason… maybe thinking too hard, or not thinking enough… anyway, it feels like I need to take a breath and push the re-start button on this riding season!

Crazy Day at the Dojo – Motocross is Safer than Martial Arts

Life-changing

I am just one of those regular motocross riders that occassionally enjoy some downtime. Instead of spending the days relaxing by the beach, I decided to take up martial arts classes because I felt the need to lose weight. I’ve been hearing about the different raves and ramblings of people who lost weight because of martial arts and I thought that it would be a good idea to enroll myself in a mixed martial artsor MMA class to get fit and learn a thing or two about kicking butt.

It’s a whole new world

When I enrolled in an MMA class a couple of months ago, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into. The first session felt like getting on my bike for the first time and doing my first jump. The rules and etiquette of the dojo were simple, and yet it felt so complicated for me. I wasn’t exactly used to the idea of me bowing all the time to my seniors and sensei, but I did anyways. Somehow, I felt compelled to do and follow everything that was written on the dojo rulebook.

The first few days

I was serious in taking the classes, even if it meant having to sacrifice two to three hours of my time every day. My first week in the dojo was both good and bad. I didn’t realize that I could feel pain in every part of my body without having to break every bone. My first sparring session gave me two bruises in the forearm, one bruise in the ribs, and one busted lip. This was the equivalent of a minor slip and slide in motocross, and I’ve had me a few of those on every ride that I had.  Thankfully, I shelved my pride as instructed by the dojo rules and etiquette, otherwise it would’ve been a crushing blow to the ego.

Then and now

Two months into the classes and I can firmly say and conclude that motocross is a lot safer than martial arts. I enjoy these two sports and I want to incorporate martial arts into my lifestyle. It helps to fill the void when I’m not practicing for any Motocross challenges or events, and it keeps me in shape. Of course, I am still open and willing to accept any injury that I get from the future sparring sessions and/or drills from my MMA classes.

How to Relax before a Motocross Race

Motocross Racing is a dangerous sport and many race drivers feel the stress when the race is drawing near.  Some people said that a trip out, 2 to 3 days before the race will be a good stress reliever. You can hide away in the forest or the mountains or escape the pressure by joining luxury cruises to get pampered and taken cared of before a big race.  According to asport psychology and mental training expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn, motocross and motorcycle race drivers improve performance and lap times by boosting mental preparations, focus and confidence on race day.  There are powerful mental game tools that will boost your mental horsepower, improving one’s confidence, teamwork and consistency.  No matter how skillful and talented a racer is and no matter how updated the equipment and tools he has, he is sure to fail if he is unprepared mentally for the competition.

Dr. Cohn came up with proven mental game strategies to enhance confidence and improve race focus for championship performances.  He developed the RacePsych program that improves mental skills for race driver and the race team’s success. The Mental Power of RacePsych is about developing prepare routines and mental strategies to enter the zone faster, regain composure when stress or frustrations are high or when things go wrong, master the strategies to enhance teamwork and maximize your winning potential, and maintain confidence and momentum to keep you focus throughout the race.

Getting ready for the race is not just about physical preparation or conditioning. Conquering the psychological and emotional barriers is equally important.  When preparing for a race, you need to prepare both physically and psychologically.  Self-doubts and fear are common hurdles for athletes. The difference between the ones who succeed and those who fail can be offset by a psychological plan.
