Go Pro Moto – QLD Moto Park MX2 Motocross

Some footage from my Go Pro Moto helmet cam. Riding a CRF450 on motocross track 2 at Queensland Moto Park. The track has a lot of off camber turns, a handful of table tops and a small section of whoops. Some tight corners and short straights.

Might be worth checking out if you live close enough or are planning a bike holiday in queensland.

Life and Limb for Motocross – My Recovery from Injuries

Love of the Sport

I love motocross and I live for the sport. I’ve joined a couple of amateur circuits in Melbourne, NSW, and Queensland within the last few years and it was awesome. However, I do intend to qualify to compete in the professional league some time in the future. Sadly, that dream may be put on hold. A couple of months ago, I was preparing for the MX Nationals (which was on Aug 19, 25, and 26). I was cruising along the track without any difficulty until a sudden, sharp, and stabbing pain raced through my left arm, causing it to jerk and clinch the front break. Next thing I knew, I was flying head-first into the ground.

One Thing Led to Another

I blacked out for two hours. I woke up in a hospital with a neck brace, a cast for my wrist and leg, and some bandages. It was a total nightmare for me, not because I wasn’t used to motorcycle injuries, but this was the most terrible set of injuries for me because I broke my leg and my arm. Doctors took an X-Ray on my left wrist and found out that I had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). I was bummed about CTS. It totally meant not being able to use my left arm for a while.

My List of Injuries

Thank God for my protective gears. If I hadn’t worn them, I could have acquired more injuries. So, after my complete diagnosis, my injuries include:

  • Fractured left shin
  • Fractured right wrist
  • Bruised lung and ribs
  • Concussion

The fractures were not so bad, given that they did not break through the skin, but it did give me a reason to go through physical therapy. I was lucky enough to find elevate.com.au because it helped me accommodate my medical needs.

3 Months in Recovery

I was fortunate enough to survive, and needless to say, I was few of the lucky ones. According to my therapist, it wasn’t their first time to accommodate motocross injury patients. Some of them were partially paralyzed from a broken spine while others suffered from various muscle tears and bone problems. My leg injury is painful, yet proper pain management is done during therapy. Doctors “jokingly” told me that I could no longer ride the bike again if my left leg doesn’t heal up. That was a freaky motivational speech or a very frightening idea.

To this day, I walk with a limp and a cane because the fracture has not healed completely yet. Doctors told me that full recovery is expected within the next 2 months and that I should continue with my physiotherapy sessions.

Ricci to manage TM bikes

TM is very proud to announce that the TM Factory Bikes will be managed by Team Ricci Racing in 2013. With the TM brand and the experience of our new team manager Ilario Ricci, TM is looking forward to a successful season with a rider in each of the MX1 and MX2 categories. Our second piece of exciting news is that we can confirm that Shaun Simpson will be riding the TM for next season's World Championship. The MX1 rider, who has previously ridden for KTM and Yamaha Factory, has chosen TM Factory with an aim to compete and secure a place within the Top 10 of the MX1 class. In a statement from the rider, Shaun expressed his enthusiasm and motivation for next year's season: "I'm really excited to be riding for a brand that's as charged and motivated as me to get the results I want. Working with Ricci is something I'm really pleased about- he's had some proven experience with two different brands in the last three years and I think it's an ideal combination at the right time. It also made the idea of developing and racing with TM a really interesting prospect for me and I'm glad we've sealed an agreement for next season. For me personally, I'm ready for next season, I still think I have a lot to show in MX1 and I really think this is a great base for me to push on that and get the results I know I'm capable of. The bike feels good, it's strong, and in the hands of past riders it's shown great potential. It's a new challenge for me and I'm geared up and motivated to push TM into a wider and greater reckoning." TM's new team manager Ilario Ricci added: "I am very honoured to have been welcomed so warmly into the TM family. It's a wonderful team of enthusiastic, focussed professionals, and together we have the energy and stimulus necessary to tackle this important challenge. I have high expectations for next year's season and I believe that we can raise the bar at TM." A big welcome from TM Racing to Ilario and Shaun, and we wish the whole team the best of luck for next year's season. With a great team behind the TM brand and, as always, maximum determination and professionalism, we're looking forward to a successful season.

Saving Energy on the Track

With heart rates constantly through the roof, moto is no doubt one of most physically demanding sports on the face of the planet.  Your heart is pumping just from the adrenaline, but throw in a rough track, huge jumps and some whoops, you will definitely work every energy system in your body.  Although it is still hot as hell down here in the Deep South (not hell, just Florida), things seem to be cooling down for the rest of the country.  However, just because it is not as hot, fatigue will creep up on you before you know.  Save yourself some pain and read on!

One of the most important things to remember is to stand up.  I know this is probably a no brainer, but some people will still ride as though the track is still smooth.  Most of the time, you will have to stand up later into corners and then get up sooner when exiting.  For rougher corners, it is even a good idea to stand up through the whole turn and look to the edges of the track for smoother lines.  Many European riders will do this because the course gets so brutal, if you sit down; your back will take all of the impact.  This is not the best idea because your back could tense up and result in some serious pain.

This next tip goes hand and hand with standing up: gripping with your legs.  I have said many times before that you will save yourself from arm pump and getting tired quickly if you squeeze the tank.  The quadriceps are large enough to take the impact from a rough course and they can handle this stress much better than your forearms and biceps/triceps.  You almost want to think of your arms as hinges to your core.  Relaxing your grip on jumps will also keep your “hinges” from cramping and pumping up too much.  To help get through extra tricky sections; you can even apply pressure to one side of the tank with your leg to help steer the bike.

If you watched the 250’s, then you saw Barcia killing it everywhere.  Other than his crazy style, he was doing something that caught my eye more than a few times during the second moto.  If you notice, he was riding on his back wheel, a lot.  The deep holes and moguls were not as bad when he could get the front wheel up.  The back wheel would just roll over the bump and the rear shock absorbs the tire’s vertical travel.  If you go through a rough section with both wheels down, it just rocks you back and forth.  I am not saying to do a full blown wheelie here, but just getting your front tire to skim or get over the rough stuff will make life much easier.  Remember that riding in a high gear will help the suspension work properly in the chop and provide you with more traction to get the front tire up.

One final tip is to just relax!  If you know that the track is rough, just accept it and ride.  When you tense up, any bump and hole you hit is sent throughout your entire body.  If your breathing is deep and even, you should be able to roll your shoulders back and ride smoother.  By your rolling them back, you can keep that attack position much easier and you open up the diaphragm for this more efficient breathing.  Like I said earlier, this is not hard stuff.  Keep it simple and remember the basics!

Remember the names as they’re sure to race the GP of Qatar

Good to see the guys are already putting in the laps in preparation for round 1 of the motocross world championship in Qatar on March 2nd – you never know they might make the superfinal.

Mohammed Al Balooshi has won the UAE’s inaugural Arab Motocross Championship on home territory recently at the Jebel Ali DMX Motocross track, bringing a fitting finale to an action-packed weekend.

Competing in the top tier MX1 category, the Emirati home favourite won both of his two races with ease, clocking 11 laps on the 1,600m track in 21 minutes and 55 seconds in the first race, while easing through his second race in 22 minutes and .06 seconds.

Al Balooshi said: “It’s a really great feeling to win the Arab Motocross Championship on home soil for the first time, and I would like to dedicate this to His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed. His support of this event is crucial to its future success.”

“I have won this championship many times in other countries, but never in the UAE, so to finally win and to be the first Emirati to win here really means a lot. I hope that this encourages more Emiratis to take up this sport.”
Held under the support and patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Arab Motocross Championship is organised by the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE).

The championship attracted a top line-up of riders from eight Middle East countries competing across two bike categories (MX1 and MX2) and a pro quad bike category.

While Al Balooshi underlined his credentials as one of region’s premier moto cross riders, fellow Emirati Mansoor Salem also dominated the pro quad bike category, winning both of his races with times of 14 minutes and 31 seconds in the first race and 16 minutes and 49 seconds in the final race.

Meanwhile, Kuwaiti rider Mohammed Jafar reigned supreme in the MX2 category, with a commanding performance in both race heats, with winning times of 22:31 and 22:33 in Race 1 and 2 respectively.

The Arab Motocross Championship 2012 is the first competitive racing series of the Arab Motorcycle Federation (AMF) following its overhaul in August this year at its Riyadh headquarters in Saudi Arabia – a move driven by the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees to take competitive bike racing in the Middle East to the next level.

Since being restructured, the AMF has been working toward developing a full calendar of motorcycle racing events in the Middle East that run to the international standards laid down by the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), the sport’s world governing body.

Final results of the Arab Motocross Championship, UAE 2012:

Non-inclusion of the Gran Premio de la República Argentina on the 2013 MotoGP™ calendar

The Gran Premio de la República Argentina, which was set to take place at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit early next year, has not been included on the 2013 calendar. On June 20th 2012, the Spanish government recommended that teams and riders sponsored by Repsol should not travel to the República Argentina due to safety reasons. Therefore, the celebration of the 2013 Gran Premio de la República Argentina remained under suspension until such recommendation would be kept in force. The deadline for Dorna Sports, commercial rights holder of the MotoGP™ World Championship, to officially propose the 2013 MotoGP calendar to FIM was November 18th.On November 20th, the Spanish government notified through email sent to Dorna Sports  the withdrawal of the above referred recommendation, when the time for the calendar presentation had already expired and therefore, there was no possibility to include a new MotoGP event.Anyhow, Dorna Sports commits itself to include Gran Premio de la República Argentina on the 2014 calendar and onwards, to be approved by FIM subject to the homologation of the track which presumably shall take place within the first quarter of 2013.Dorna Sports recognizes the Gran Premio de la República Argentina Promoter´s efforts regarding the satisfactorily termination of the construction works and the organization and promotion preliminary activities.Communication MotoGP - www.motogp.com -

Márquez concludes test as rain arrives in Sepang

Marc Márquez has completed his testing programme in Malaysia, but not before rain arrived to disrupt him and the team once more. As per yesterday, this morning the Spaniard was delayed going on track due to rain from the night before, he eventually went on track at 11h45. Marc and the team worked hard all day trying various set ups on the RC213V machine, taking important feedback to put them in the best position for the February tests. They had planned a long run at the end of the day but after just 10 laps of the run, rain arrived to interrupt proceedings once again. Marc completed 41 laps on his final day with a fastest lap time of 2'01.56.Marc Márquez"At the beginning of the day the track was slightly wet from last night's rain, the same as yesterday morning, so we didn't go on track until 11.45am. We tested many things today, we knew that some wouldn't work but it gives us an idea and direction for the testing here in Febraury next year. In the end I am very happy because my lap time was pretty constant and I feel a good rhythm on the bike now. We planned a long run at the end of the day but then the rain arrived again around 4.30pm.Physically, I'm happy —for sure I need to do some work now in the winter to arrive at the next test stronger and fitter but in general I feel good, even on the longer run of 10 laps today, the lap time was consistent and I felt strong. It's been a good test and I feel we have improved each day, now we must wait a few months until we are back here with everyone else!"Communication Repsol Media -www.repsolmedia.com -

No more seniors at stanmore motocross track

Gold coast city council has made the decision to prevent seniors from riding at Stanmore motocross track indefinitely. The decision handed down by Senior Recreation Officer Bruce Flick bflick@goldcoast.qld.gov.au means the end of the road for a club which has operated for over 30 years catering for senior and junior motocross.

The decision also stipulates that the club could be reopened for Junior riders supporting up to 250cc bikes. One might ask why not seniors up to 250cc as a compromise if noise is the only issue. However further constraints on any future operation of the club facilities are biased towards gold coast residents over both committee and general club members who live in other outer Brisbane and Sunshine Coast districts.

The Gold Coast council is also supportive of the Gold Coast motorcycle club at Reedy Creek facility looking into town planning approval for the future use catering of the location for all bike classes.

Five (woops – six!) more cool places in Iowa you must see

A few years ago I blogged about some cool places in Iowa that I thought were must-sees. While I’ve still only been to #3, 4 and 5 on that original list, we have been to some neat spots that I wanted to add to the must-see list for others who are interested in what the state has to offer. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Lincoln Highway Bridge – the last remaining original Lincoln Highway Bridge in the United States, people! In Tama, Iowa, northeast of Des Moines.

2. Palmyra Church - just a neat little place to stop and appreciate some chippy Gothic goodness, in the tiny town of Palmyra, southeast of Des Moines.

3. Freedom Rock/Iowa Veterans Cemetery – A giant boulder near Greenfield, Iowa, painted annually by Ray Sorensen, celebrating the valor of the U.S. Military; and, a beautiful cemetery just for veterans and their spouses, set in the hillsides of Dallas County just outside Van Meter, Iowa, west of Des Moines.

4. Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge – A high-quality museum dedicated to the native flora and fauna of Iowa. Just outside Prairie City, east of Des Moines.

5. Pella Dutch Heritage Village and Cordova Observation Tower – a little history, a great view, and Dutch letters, plus if you time it right, a boatload of tulips southeast of Des Moines.

6. Iowa Arboretum – A beautiful natural area and “library of living plants” northwest of Des Moines

And, a few new places I’ve added to my own list of future rides:

1. Lineville, Iowa – simply because of the curvy road that gets you there! South of Des Moines, near the Missouri border. (Hence, “Lineville.”)

2. Allerton, Iowa – home of a hundred-year-old restored round barn, and pioneer-era restored church and school. Southeast of Des Moines, on the way to or from Lineville.

3. Jefferson, Iowa – five-story bell tower donated by William & Dora Mahanay, looking out over 30 miles and five counties, northwest of Des Moines.

4. Lake Panorama – Apparently it’s a bit of a curve-hugger’s dream riding around the perimeter of Lake Panorama near Stuart, Iowa (or at least the part you CAN ride around), so it seems like something I should check out.

The Scrub

Watching the pros, you can guarantee that every rider is going to scrub.  Even amateurs are perfecting the “Bubba Scrub.”  This is not just something they do for fun.  This is a technique that can help you stay lower in the air and get back on Mother Earth and on the gas.  If you see someone perform the scrub right, it looks effortless and so smooth.  It really is an art form as no 2 scrubs are alike.  For this reason, it is important to start things slow and on a single or something small; eventually working your way up to normal size jumps.

The first thing is to approach the face at a slight angle.  If you plan on leaning to the right, you want to angle yourself to be pointing slightly to the left.  This allows you to turn the bars and lean the bike without scrubbing off of the track.  As the front wheel comes off of the lip, you want to begin to turn the bars the same way you are leaning.  You don’t want to try and make this like a turn.  That will only throw the rear end out and you will still be upright, defeating the whole purpose of this.  Keep this in mind and just lean.  As I said before, this is a unique technique, so it you prefer to stand, stand up.  If you like to sit down, have a seat.

Once you feel you are off of the jump, you want to keep turning the bars down.  This gets the motion of the whip going.  You really want to try and pivot and squeeze with your legs.  This is not just a movement with your arms; you want to help the bike through the flow with your hips and legs.  As you approach the peak of your flight, you will start to feel a point where you need to bring it back.  I have not brought it back in time and I can tell you, it hurts.

You will feel the bike want to come back to its normal, upright position.  To get this process going, simply turn the bars back the other way.  Combine this with a little bit of gas (to get the rear wheel spinning) and the centripetal motion of the wheels will get you back to the right position.  Don’t forget that apply pressure on the foot pegs so you can help bring the bike back with your legs.

When you get the bike straight, be sure to get on the gas.  This will help you drive through any swaps or any problems you have with the scrub when you land.  Like I said, this is a one of kind technique.  You need to practice this and start small.  Jumps that are slower and have long faces will help you out a lot and when you feel comfortable enough, transition to faster, shorter jump faces.  Everything should be a fluid, smooth motion.  It will come faster than you think and you will be throwing scrubs like James himself.
