The Sit Down With Ronnie Faisst

MENSHOL12.PAGE .74.WRK The Sit Down With Ronnie Faisst

What has been going on in the world of Ronnie Faisst?

Pretty much the last week I’ve had Nuclear Cowboyz rehearsal with the rest of the team and then got dialed in for the first two shows of the tour. Other than that I’m just on the tour schedule right now… travel, shows Saturday and Sunday, fitness, training and back home getting organized again for the next week. Been staying busy that is for sure. During the week just training hard, gym and riding as much as I can with the team.

faisst The Sit Down With Ronnie Faisst

Who else from the Mulisha is on the Nuclear Cowboyz tour with you?

Myself, Wes, Julian, Fitzo, Garland, Dunne and then Bell is our alternate on this years tour. This year is going to be fun! Wes is taking on the Leader roll of the tour for the Mulisha team which is cool and we all look forward to each stop. Last year I had that roll as the Leader with the Gold Bike but I’m pretty pumped on how my bike looks right now all blacked out… looks pretty bad!

Are there any particular stops on the tour your excited about?

I’m looking forward to Jersey because I got a lot of family and friends out there including my buddy’s I used to race with. They all come out to the show and have a good time for sure. I like the Tampa stop as well, I got friends down there and it’s always warm.

How did you like the Transworld Motocross ad?

I thought the ad was really cool, good concept and by far my favorite ad of all the ads Mulisha has done on me. It really shows who I am, what I do, and big parts of my life. The ad has my Harley in there that I love to ride, all the Martial Arts I train for, photos of me as a kid racing. It’s almost like flashback of my life.

Any changes to your FMX Compound?

Well at my house I am fortunate enough to have a really nice Speed and Style track and freestyle setup. It’s great to get out there and train daily for tours, contest and demos. I put in some different lanes, options, and whoops early this year on my track which has been helping me out a lot. In February I plan on rebuilding the whole thing again and changing it up so it’s fresh and something new. X Games went Global this year but unfortunately they only have 2 stops for Speed and Style. The first one is in Brazil but I am already committed to Nuclear so I can’t attend that contest but I will however be ready to take on the X Games in Los Angeles for Speed and Style. I really want to go out there and win this year. Last year was great for me, I took the Bronze so, I’m going to keep training, come up with some good tricks and work on my start. The biggest thing about Speed and Style is the start, and my biggest competitors right now for that event is Twitch and Mason so I’m ready to get out there and work on that Gold medal!

You had a fan question on our Facebook page from Noah Manly, How did you fist get into Motocross and what would you recommend for a beginner on the track?

I got into Motocross when I was 9 years old and started riding in the back yard and started to make a track at this gravel pit up the street from my house. My dad was pretty impressed and took me races and started racing. I think for a beginner on the track or someone just starting to learn, is basic body techniques and control of the bike like the throttle, clutch and how to position your body. That’s really everything and a great start to get into corners, whoops and go with your speed throughout the track. Things will start feeling right on the bike for and you’ll know. I taught myself and then signed up for a Motocross school to really buckle down on what to do right. So I’d say go to a Motocross school, learn the basics and take one step at a time until you start getting more comfortable on your bike.

Another Fan question is from Patrick Borgman, What is the funnest trick for you to perform in your opinion?

Man I would have to say Whips man. They never get old for some reason and they’re so fun. It feels so good to get out there and find that one jump that you roll up on, and crack out a big whip and just hang it! To me they never get old, it’s the oldest trick in the book but man it’s so fun. I’d say for Freestyle trick I really like doing Double Nacs… those are always fun.

Last question from Brendan Smith, who would win a fight, Mister Miyagi or Bruce Lee?

Dude, Bruce Lee haha.

Five (woops – six!) more cool places in Iowa you must see

A few years ago I blogged about some cool places in Iowa that I thought were must-sees. While I’ve still only been to #3, 4 and 5 on that original list, we have been to some neat spots that I wanted to add to the must-see list for others who are interested in what the state has to offer. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Lincoln Highway Bridge – the last remaining original Lincoln Highway Bridge in the United States, people! In Tama, Iowa, northeast of Des Moines.

2. Palmyra Church - just a neat little place to stop and appreciate some chippy Gothic goodness, in the tiny town of Palmyra, southeast of Des Moines.

3. Freedom Rock/Iowa Veterans Cemetery – A giant boulder near Greenfield, Iowa, painted annually by Ray Sorensen, celebrating the valor of the U.S. Military; and, a beautiful cemetery just for veterans and their spouses, set in the hillsides of Dallas County just outside Van Meter, Iowa, west of Des Moines.

4. Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge – A high-quality museum dedicated to the native flora and fauna of Iowa. Just outside Prairie City, east of Des Moines.

5. Pella Dutch Heritage Village and Cordova Observation Tower – a little history, a great view, and Dutch letters, plus if you time it right, a boatload of tulips southeast of Des Moines.

6. Iowa Arboretum – A beautiful natural area and “library of living plants” northwest of Des Moines

And, a few new places I’ve added to my own list of future rides:

1. Lineville, Iowa – simply because of the curvy road that gets you there! South of Des Moines, near the Missouri border. (Hence, “Lineville.”)

2. Allerton, Iowa – home of a hundred-year-old restored round barn, and pioneer-era restored church and school. Southeast of Des Moines, on the way to or from Lineville.

3. Jefferson, Iowa – five-story bell tower donated by William & Dora Mahanay, looking out over 30 miles and five counties, northwest of Des Moines.

4. Lake Panorama – Apparently it’s a bit of a curve-hugger’s dream riding around the perimeter of Lake Panorama near Stuart, Iowa (or at least the part you CAN ride around), so it seems like something I should check out.

Long Ruts on Straights

Nothing reminds me of motocross more than a rutted up, fast, flowing track.  This is the pinnacle obstacle that separates the men from the boys.  If you watched Southwick this past weekend, then you saw the insane ruts in the moist New England sand.  Most beginners find themselves nervous approaching long ruts and often end up on the ground.  It doesn’t matter if a rut is in a corner, on a straight or on the face of a jump, you will encounter one sooner or later.  Some look at this as a burden, but you can actually use these to your advantage.

A lot of people can go fast on a straightaway.  It’s pretty simple; open the throttle as far as possible.  That’s generally how ruts get formed on straights.  People actually use the power of their bikes and it trenches out the soil.  Obviously, the main line will get dug the deepest.  In the beginning of the day, this won’t be a bad choice to use.  It just depends on how it sets you up for the next section.  However, a majority of the time, the main line usually gets too deep and ends up slowing you down.

When the whole straight gets rutted out, things start to get a little tricky.  The middle of the track is going to have deeper ruts than the edges of the track.  So, by taking the edges of the track, you can avoid the choppy mess made by the slower riders and you can save your energy for more important times in the moto.

As with any rut, approaching it with both wheels in line is very important.  You want to keep both wheels in the rut, preventing you from getting cross rutted.  You also maintain your momentum and forward drive, as well.  Once, you have both wheels lined up, keeping your head up and vision ahead is very important.  Staring at the ground right in front of you will only send you one place, the dirt.  That is not where you want to be.  A good guide is to keep your vision a few bike lengths ahead of you.  The faster you go, the further you want to look.

Depending on how deep the ruts are, a good idea is to ride on the balls of your feet (and point your toes in, gripping the cases).  This prevents your feet from getting caught in the rut and ripping your leg off the peg.  As always, you want to be gripping the bike with your knees and applying steady, consistent throttle.  As you get to the end of the straight, there are more than likely going to be braking bumps.  This is where you want to start shifting your weight back slightly to keep you from going over the bars.

Like I said, if you can conquer ruts, you can conquer anything.  It is mind over matter and just keeping good form and looking ahead.  Stay loose and relax; you’ll get through them sooner than you think.

Whether You Drive or Ride, Australia’s Countryside is Waiting For You

Extreme sports are among the highlights and tourists attractions in Australia. Different adventure activities challenge local and visitors to discover their limits. Tourism in the country has shifted services to accommodate the craving for adventure. Bayswater Car Rentals and other local service agencies have track directories of where to go and what to do while staying in adventure hotspots.

Motocross or motorcycle racing has a following worldwide and they head to Australia to find the best dirt roads. Dirt bike tracks are scattered around Australia and managed by locals who have passion for the sports. Clubs gather to enjoy freestyle and racing competitions.

Local and international competitions are held annually by prestigious organizations of motocross sports. Major sponsors and dirt bike riders all over the world fly to Australia for yearly competitions and non-competition gatherings. From races to ride exhibitions, patrons of the sports mingle with each other to exchange tips and techniques.

Popular motocross spots in the country are found in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, West Australia, and South Australia. There are the popular spots where dirty bike riders hit it off. There still are undiscovered spots where only a few have visited. With the landmass of around 7.7 sq. km. there are quite a number of secret spots where bikers call heaven.

Every location varies in type of riding experience. Free riding in sand dunes, MX practice tracks, motocross tracks, and even own properties are transformed into customized riding tracks.

Tourism in Australia acknowledges the subculture evolving around extreme sports such as motocross. It recognizes that the country is also known not just for the beaches and arts, but also the motocross racing. A good population of both locals and tourists nurture the subculture of the sports as it begins to be accepted as a mainstream sport worldwide.

Headshake Solutions

When I first started riding big bikes, I was so stoked to finally have all of the power I wanted.  However, with great power, comes great responsibility…courtesy of Uncle Ben from Spiderman.  Sometimes, we can get ahead of ourselves on a rougher track and the braking bumps fight back.  Most of the time, the chop and speed result in head shake.  This uncontrollable shaking can be thwarted with a few adjustments.

One of the most common reasons for head shake is fatigue.  When you are fatigued, your form goes out the window and it gets worse as the moto progresses.  Your elbows drop and you cannot get enough leverage to keep the bars straight.  As you get more and more head shake, you begin to grip harder with your hands and the forearms pump up to bricks.  Sound about right?  When your upper body feels like rubber, the need to grip with your legs becomes even greater.  Again, the quadriceps and hamstrings are a much larger muscle group that can support greater loads of stress for longer periods of times.  Start the moto out with a conscience effort of using your legs more than your arms and you will be better off.

Another problem is RPM range.  The relationship between the motor and suspension is pretty crazy when you really think about it.  When you hear pros run through whoops and moguls, they are running a higher gear.  The RPMs are lower and take some of the load off of the forks and shock.  They travel smoother and won’t bind, which gives you that bouncing effect through the rough stuff.  If you shift down AFTER the braking bumps, you allow your suspension to ride with you, instead of against you.  The forks will travel through the entire stroke and do their job; soak up the terrain.

Weight distribution is also important.  Maintaining your attack position through the rough chop will help keep your elbows up and in good form.  This attack position will place your weight evenly over the bike, allowing you to make changes if need be.  As I have said before, riding on the balls of your feet will give you some extra “suspension” and forces you to grip the bike with your legs.

By throwing good form and the right gear together, head shake will be a thing of the past.  Of course, making sure your sag is set on the shock and your clickers are dialed is important, but the rider can make a big difference.  As always, remember the basics and keep it fun.

Wojo at WEC #7 at Burnt River

Rutted Corners

There are two obstacles you will always have to face on the track: ruts and corners.  Combine the two and traversing themcan be frustrating.  The power and torque that modern four strokes produce is pretty incredible and lines get dug out quickly.  Corners are the backbone of speed which makes it essential to be extremely proficient in riding at any situation.

One thing that has always helped me is to concentrate on one corner that is giving me problems.  Try to get to the track later in the day when it is rougher and not as many people are there.  Find your corner and enter the track safely in the section before, then hit the corner and go back to the previous section to repeat.  If there aren’t many people, this will allow you plenty of time to find what you need to work on.

The first aspect you need to look at is your entrance technique.  You want to be in the attack position all the way through the chop.  Braking should be gradual; do not lock the back tire up or the rear end can sway side to side.  For inside ruts, putting more emphasis on the front brake will get your front forks to squat lower so you can carve harder.  As for outside lines, it is better to use the back to keep more momentum up.

When it comes time to sit, the process from standing to sitting should be one, fluid motion.  You sit, put the inside leg up, and apply the throttle smoothly.  Some have a tendency to blip the throttle and it bounces them around.  The suspension throws the rider from the flow of the turn as leaning and steering become out of sync.  A simple way to help with this is to just look ahead!  When you approach the corner, look at the apex.  As you get closer to the apex, begin looking further and further ahead to the next obstacle.  You go wherever you look.

One overlooked method is to stay relaxed.  Ride with the turn and don’t try to blast through it.  Don’t tighten up so much and worry about messing up.  You know how to ride a bike so have confidence in your abilities.  Take some time to get this down and you will be making up time on every one.

Freestyle rider Emma McFerran planning to perform backflip in Berlin

Australia's first female freestyle motocross rider, Emma McFerran, will be lining up at NIGHT of the JUMPS on the weekend of 8th/9th March in Berlin. The FMX amazon aims to become the first woman ever to perform a backflip in the world championship series. In December, Emma jumped her way into the record books, pulling off the first backflip by an Australian woman rider in the history of the sport. This was in the Lockhart (NSW) FMX park belonging to X Games gold medallist Jackson 'Jacko' Strong. It qualifies her as one of only two women who have ever had a happy landing after pulling a flip on a motorbike. Now fans attending NIGHT of the JUMPS in Berlin also have the pleasure of seeing Emma in action.Emma McFerran took up motocross racing in 2002, contesting eight straight seasons in the Senior Women's Open and the Seniors B (250f/125cc class). In 2010, she was finally able to realise her dream to become the first – and so far only – female freestyle motocross rider in Australia. With the help of her older brother, professional FMX rider Matty McFerran, she succeeded in making the switch from racing to freestyle. Matty coached her both on the technical side and in developing the relevant skills. Emma's first breakthrough into the FMX scene came when she received a personal invitation from superstar P!NK and husband Carey Hart to sign up for the National Hart and Huntington Freestyle Tour as a support act to the concerts. Unfortunately, Emma was injured during rehearsals and had to content herself with the role of spectator. Her next big break came with the relaunch of the Crusty Demons in 2010. Emma performed her repertoire of tricks to packed arenas in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. After taking a tumble in Darwin in April 2012, she came back strongly to pull off her long-planned 'maiden' backflip in December. Emma's appearance at the NIGHT of the JUMPS / FIM Freestyle MX World Championship is a first for the show. But this will be just one highlight of many to enthral the spectators at o2 World, because Berlin promises to stage the most sensational NIGHT of the JUMPS of all time. In the Maxxis Highest Air, repeat winner Massimo Bianconcini will try to beat his own record of 11.5 metres. In the Whip Contest, 15-year-old prodigy Luc Ackermann will be taking on the freestyle motocross elite. And the best FMX professionals in the world will be battling hard for championship points in the main freestyle competition. No other motorcycle sport or extreme sport series comes anywhere near this for explosive thrills.Communication NIGHToftheJUMPs - www.NIGHToftheJUMPs.com -

How Trampolines Improved my Motocross Jumps and Tumbles

My hobby and downfall

My mother wasn’t really supportive of my hobby. She has seen these insane videos where people break their necks and lose their lives by doing insane stunts. I told her that I wasn’t even doing any of those, but she still insists that it will happen to me one day. That didn’t stop her from watching me race every now and then. I’ve always dreamt of doing those X-Games motorbike stunts, but I suck at gymnastic routines like tucks, tumbles and jumps. If I can’t do those on the ground, how am I supposed to pull that off with a motorcycle?

Trampoline dry runs

A friend of mine who’s a gymnastics coach told me of an innovative tool that could improve my jumps and tumbles: trampoline. I actually thought that he was pulling my leg but I gave it a shot in their gym and I couldn’t believe it. The airtime that you get from trampolines is similar to what you get from the airtime you get from Motocross humps and jumps; you only had a few seconds to pull off a trick before you land on your feet. Within those short seconds, you need to complete to motion, otherwise you’d be bouncing face first on the trampoline or worst, the ground.

The drills

I wasn’t exactly comfortable doing the drills without proper guidance so I bummed at my friend’s gymnasium and made use of their big trampolines, surrounded by rubber pads. My coach taught me like he would teach his students, so he was making me run flexibility exercises and drills before I could do the routine on the trampoline.

A couple of weeks later, I started out with the basic trampoline workout program that involved tucks, knee-bends, and sprints. All of which can bolster one’s balance and agility in between airtimes. The routines were difficult and the timings were even more difficult. It took me close to a month before I could get used to the flow.

After the program, I was already confident with my trampoline and bouncing skills. I even got enough airtime that almost reached as high as a motocross jump. Before I started to do the tumbles and jumps, my friend told me about the basic concepts of the tumbles, from the front-flips to the back-flips. The concepts included the starting position and your landing position. He had his students demonstrate for me and it looked difficult. When I did it, my face kept meeting the ground a lot.

He detected my hesitation every time I did a flip, which was the reason why my flips failed. He told me that you’ve gone past the starting position, there’s no turning back and you have to commit. I took his words to heart and day by day, my jumps and tumbles improved.

I did a test run on my motorcycle a month after I got the hang of the entire motion. I did front flips like they were nothing and the motorcycle felt like a part of me every time I jumped. I’ve gotten over one roadblock in my motocross passion.

Ryan Sheckler for The Marana

Words and photography by Samuel McGuire

It’s difficult writing something new about someone so celebrated, for good and bad, in skateboard media over the years. Ryan’s life is arguably a deviation from The Truman Show, and sponsored since age 7, he’s spent more of it in front of a camera than not. In a confusing world that strangely turns its back on him some years while eagerly anticipating his video part the next, Ryan hovers between a normal kid from San Clemente – who, like you and I, wants to hang and skate with our friends – and the media celebrity he’s grown into. I met Sheckler in the fall of 2010 on King of The Road where we held down the back panel during the whole trip and I got to know him pretty well. I got to see Ryan’s intensity – long van rides of him sleeping to a pit stop spot check and an unexplainable spike in energy resulting in some of the gnarliest tricks I’ve ever seen. He’ll see a 13-stair at the morning coffee spot and get so hyped he’ll start going for tricks and then after landing the tricks, laugh at what a dork he is for getting so hyped he forgot to eat first—which is why it’s so awesome traveling and skating with him; he’s always doing something awesome. That’s the reason we always tune back in. This past week I caught up with Ryan to talk about his life this year, the etnies Marana and his future plans:

Ryan Sheckler skate the city in the etnies Marana. Pin It

Let’s just get right to it. How is the Plan B video coming? It’s coming along very well; we are actually just about to leave for China this week. We’ve been filming a bunch and I’m gonna have a full part. Sometime next year it should be out. It’s gonna be amazing.

It’s the whole team – Danny Way and everyone? The whole team.

Any crazy demos, or big mega ramp stuff planned for those dudes? Nope, just a Plan B video filming trip. Street Colin and Street Danny are coming out.

Street Danny goes hard. Street Danny goes hard in the paint. Danny Way is just a gnarly human being. Have you seen his documentary yet? It’s incredible. It’s sad too, dude, it’s just gnarly; you’ll tear up. It’s gnarly because you think you know he’s gone through so much stuff, but then you see the video and it’s only half the things he’s been through. It’s like, how did he even think of skateboarding with all that stuff going on?

Does he intimidate you? I’ve heard he’s a very intimidating dude just in how gnarly he is. No. I respect his strength and his will power. He’s a complete beast. I love him to death. I think it’s interesting everything he has to say; he’s very animated and it’s awesome. He’s funny.

What’s the story with the Mega Ramp? How did that all go down? That was just Danny telling me he knew 100% that I could do it. I knew I could do it. I just wanted to feel that drop in and have an understanding of what I’m watching when I see the mega ramp dudes go crazy. I just wanted to feel it. He was just like, “Go, you got it. Go right now.” So we went.

You just went right then? Yeah then he dropped in and tried to do a rocket air backflip over the 75 foot jump not even warmed up. I just got so psyched, I dropped in and I ollied it and then I did a kickflip indy.

So once you ollied it, were you like, “alright I got this”? Totally, yeah it was just fun at that point. I probably dropped in on that thing about 10 times. Never hit the QP though; got too scared for that. (Laughs)

It’s got to be amazing to skate with all of those guys. Dude, they are so good. It makes me trip out, like – I don’t know – I got to get on my grind and learn new tricks. Dude, Felipe does shit that does not make sense.

Speaking of tours, where have you been recently that you’ve liked? Um, man, I’ve been so all over the place this year. What was sick this year? Germany, Vienna and Amsterdam were super fun with the etnies crew.

Have you noticed on trips that you don’t have to pack as many shoes with the Marana? Average Tour maybe 10 days? Yeah 10 day tour for sure. I wear them ‘til I can’t wear them anymore. Honestly the past few pairs have worn out on the sole before the toe area because they are built so durable. It’s gnarly. It’s rad, though – you can bring your chill shoe and your skate shoe and you’re good to go.

Skate Life with Ryan Sheckler as he sets up his board while wearing the etnies Marana. Pin It

How did the Marana come about? Was it a team shoe you skated a lot or did you have a lot of say in the design? No, the Marana, we built it from the ground up. So I had an idea to create a new shoe but Kubota and I – well everyone kind of talked about how we didn’t really want to call it the “Sheckler 7”, so I thought it’d be cool to name it after the street I lived on.

Why did you want to make such a durable shoe, especially in a time when vulcanized, small, thin shoes are popular? I just got tired of heel bruises and having a pair of shoes I really liked but only being able to skate them for 4 or 5 sessions cause they would blow out. So I kind of just wanted to go towards that skatepark skater kid who’s just skating everyday and doesn’t have the time or means to be buying shoes all the time. I just wanted something super durable and something like the Marana that, once it breaks in, it’s one of the most comfy shoes to wear that lasts.

I think that kids think Pros skate new stuff every time they go skate, and I was surprised to find out that most Pros don’t. Do you think having a half worn-in shoe or board helps you feel more comfortable to skate? I think that yeah, skating in broken in shoes is probably my favorite. That’s the good part about this shoe is that it lasts long enough for you to get to that point. You skate in it long enough it starts to mold to your foot so you can start learning faster, and then it will last after that so you can feel comfortable skating in it for a while after.

Yeah I want to try a pair out. You gotta get a pair, man. That’s what’s crazy – they last fore-ev-er.

Ryan Sheckler with a quick rest during a session. Pin It

Let’s talk about Sheckler Sessions. How’d that all come about? Through Red Bull having their own channel on YouTube. They wanted to know if I wanted to be a part of it and I said, “Yeah, sure. We’ll just film whatever I’m doing and give it to you.” It’s been working out nice. No scripts. I just explain where we are at and I just skate and do what we are doing. It’s pretty mellow.

Is it a fun excuse for you to do cool shit you’ve always wanted to do? Yeah, it’s really fun. I try to get everyone involved – all my friends. I got to go skydiving… a bunch of cool stuff.

Was Hawaii your first time skydiving? Yeah, first time.

Scary? Uh, yeah (laughs)

I’ve always thought the scariest part of the skydive would be when you’re hanging by your chute, just high enough to realize how high you really are but with nothing but the chute holding you up. Dude, totally – it was. We jumped tandem so I was strapped to a guy and while hanging there, the guy loosened up my straps so it’d be more comfortable and I thought I was falling out! I lost it, man; it was so scary.

Now that you’ve done that, do you think you can pull off the skydive from space? Absolutely not. That’d be the end of my career. No, I’d skydive again but it’s scary.

So on this past trip to Europe, you got to see Willow turn Pro... I love Willow, dude. That’s my dude. When I first met him I instantly knew he was my homie; he was a friend. He’s a warrior, man. He’s been through a lot and he kills it.

How was it being there when he got surprised with his first pro board? Was it the first time you’d seen Willow speechless? Yeah it really was… cause his family was there and he loves his family so much, which is big for me. He got all amped up. It was really rad to see.

Yeah that was a big moment in his life. And he’s such a rad guy. It was epic being there. Yeah, so gnar. Are you kidding me? It was so rad… well deserved. That nollie tre-flip he did on that double set in Berlin… It’s so gnarly. He does it so good. One: how do you commit to that? And two: nollie tre-flip just seems so not right (laughs).

That’s also where you shot the switch flip photo for the ad. Was there any story behind that? That day was just another… dumb Ryan… I don’t know. First spot of the day.

Ryan Sheckler, switch kickflip in the etnies Marana. Pin It

Before breakfast, dude, you didn’t even eat. I remember because fat boy was cranky and wanted food and coffee. And here you were, already jumping down this 13-stair. Oh my god, yeah. It was really cool. It was at a train station, the main cathedral in Cologne and the energy was really cool, a lot of people around so it wasn’t like I was skating and everyone was watching only me. There was so much going on; me skating just kind of fit in so I was hyped.

Plus, it was at the cathedral, which looks epic. Yeah and I don’t really switch flip much; I haven’t quite figured it out on big shit, so to be able to get one down something big was awesome.

It’s funny because you did another trick before and as I was setting up you were hyped and in passing you looked at me and said, “Are you ready? Don’t mess this up; I only want to do this once.” (Laughs)

And it got so in my head like, “Do I always mess his photos up? Is it a bad angle?” Haha, yeah I don’t really even remember saying that; I was just caught up in the moment jumping down that big set.

So when you started doing the switch flip I was just having a full anxiety attack. I ran over to the bridge and you threw one out, and luckily I had done a test shot with the lens on Auto Focus cause you landed the next one. I was going to take it later and just panicked and heard the shutter go off – you land it and I just had this sinking feeling that I blew it. I didn’t even look at the photo for the rest of the day; I kind of hid from everyone packing up thinking I blew it until I saw it that night. It’s crazy how it works out like that sometimes. Yeah sorry – I don’t even remember saying that at all… (Laughs)

It’s funny cause without you saying that and me freaking out, I might have actually blown the photo... Haha, that’s tight. That’s awesome, dude. Well it turned out super rad.

So this year is your 15th year at etnies; how’s that feel? It makes me feel old (laughs). It’s gnarly, dude – I’m 22, I’ve been on something my whole life. Oh it’s amazing; don’t get me wrong. It’s just trippy to think about it. That’s a long commitment, you know, from both sides. I’m just so psyched things have worked out. I’ve got the support I needed from the Brand; that’s like, on some family shit.

So how did you end up on etnies 15 years ago? I got hooked up through Don Brown. He either saw me at a skate contest or something and he hit us up. I don’t know – I think I was 7 and he told me to go down to Costa Mesa to pick up some shoes. So Shane and I went down there and Don Brown cut Shane’s Airwalks off of his feet. It was gnarly.

15 at Oakley too, right? Yep. 15 at Oakley, which is awesome. I love their glasses. I don’t remember how that started either. I mean, Mark Scurto hooked it up and now Dylan Radloff hooks me up, but I don’t quite remember how it all started.

Two solid brands to be backed by for 15 years... Yeah man, it’s amazing. It’s gnarly when you step back and start thinking about it. It’s like, whoa.

The End.

The Scrub

Watching the pros, you can guarantee that every rider is going to scrub.  Even amateurs are perfecting the “Bubba Scrub.”  This is not just something they do for fun.  This is a technique that can help you stay lower in the air and get back on Mother Earth and on the gas.  If you see someone perform the scrub right, it looks effortless and so smooth.  It really is an art form as no 2 scrubs are alike.  For this reason, it is important to start things slow and on a single or something small; eventually working your way up to normal size jumps.

The first thing is to approach the face at a slight angle.  If you plan on leaning to the right, you want to angle yourself to be pointing slightly to the left.  This allows you to turn the bars and lean the bike without scrubbing off of the track.  As the front wheel comes off of the lip, you want to begin to turn the bars the same way you are leaning.  You don’t want to try and make this like a turn.  That will only throw the rear end out and you will still be upright, defeating the whole purpose of this.  Keep this in mind and just lean.  As I said before, this is a unique technique, so it you prefer to stand, stand up.  If you like to sit down, have a seat.

Once you feel you are off of the jump, you want to keep turning the bars down.  This gets the motion of the whip going.  You really want to try and pivot and squeeze with your legs.  This is not just a movement with your arms; you want to help the bike through the flow with your hips and legs.  As you approach the peak of your flight, you will start to feel a point where you need to bring it back.  I have not brought it back in time and I can tell you, it hurts.

You will feel the bike want to come back to its normal, upright position.  To get this process going, simply turn the bars back the other way.  Combine this with a little bit of gas (to get the rear wheel spinning) and the centripetal motion of the wheels will get you back to the right position.  Don’t forget that apply pressure on the foot pegs so you can help bring the bike back with your legs.

When you get the bike straight, be sure to get on the gas.  This will help you drive through any swaps or any problems you have with the scrub when you land.  Like I said, this is a one of kind technique.  You need to practice this and start small.  Jumps that are slower and have long faces will help you out a lot and when you feel comfortable enough, transition to faster, shorter jump faces.  Everything should be a fluid, smooth motion.  It will come faster than you think and you will be throwing scrubs like James himself.
