Paulo Goncalves remains in contention for victory

The Speedbrain duo of Paulo Goncalves and Quinn Cody ended the third day of the Sealine Cross Country Rally in Qatar in second and fifth place, respectively. Goncalves, who finished behind race leader Marc Coma, was able to consolidate his runner-up position in the overall classification. Cody scored a top five result for the first time in the race and has been further getting his arms around the navigation matters.Paulo Goncalves: "Yet another hard and long day in the Qatar desert. The course started once more in the dunes, while the middle part was fast and stoney. The second half pretty much led through the open desert, with some key navigation hurdles to overcome. I could catch the riders having started in front of me after the refuelling stop and only Coma was quicker today. I am excited how my Speedbrain 450 Rally bike keeps performing. Tomorrow are 237 kilometres left, a top result is what I´m going for."Quinn Cody: "I wanted to concentrate on the navigation today and make no mistakes. That´s what I did, after I´m now used to the bike and the speed in this rally. Too bad it´s over by tomorrow. This is a perfect race to test and to train."The team wishes Pal-Anders Ullevalseter, who crashed today, a speedy and full recovery.Result Stage 3:1. Coma-Camps (ESP, KTM) 4h40m35s2. etnies Honored with Environment Award for its Global Reforestation Initiative

March 26, 2013 (Lake Forest, CA) – Since 2011, through its global Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree program, etnies has planted more than 200,000 trees to help replenish the severely deforested communities throughout Costa Rica and Brazil. etnies is honored to announce its efforts have been recognized by the Surf Retailers Federation (SRF) and is the 2013 recipient of the esteemed Australian Surf Industry Environment Award for this reforestation initiative!

etnies’ environmental initiatives, led by etnies owner and CEO Pierre-Andre Senizergues, have been at the forefront of the brand’s plans for a brighter future. These initiatives include pledging to become a carbon-neutral company by 2020; constructing the buildings of its U.S. and European headquarters with solar panels, water-saving technology and many other sustainable features; and of course, its Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree program. With help and support from etnies’ global team, including partner Quattro Sports representing the brand in Australia, the Buy a Shoe, Plant a tree program has been an international success and has begun to receive recognition from respected organizations like SRF.

"We are honored, appreciative and charged up to do more, especially after our team has received this award," says Pierre-Andre Senizergues. "For the last 13 years, we have been determined to reduce our carbon footprint and take a step in the right direction. We are encouraged that our community realizes this need and embraces the importance of going in that direction. This award is for everyone who has participated in this program -- our consumers for voting for the environment with their purchase so that trees can be planted, our retailers and distributors for believing in it and making this program available, and for our internal team at etnies for supporting it and working with everyone to ensure that we have so many trees planted each year!"

Andy Derrick, National Sales Manager for etnies Australia distribution partner Quattro Sports, accepted the Environment Award at the Australian Surf Industry Awards in Sydney on etnies’ behalf (above) and starred in etnies’ Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree “Make Wilko Plant Trees” (below)

Wilko: SUP with all these trees?

The Australian Surf Industry Awards in Sydney, hosted by SRF, a non-profit organization founded and run by Surf Retailers, awarded etnies with the 2013 Environment Award for the brand’s Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree environmental initiative within the business community that achieved measurable results in the eyes of both SRF members and sponsors.

Through the Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree program, etnies plants a tree for every pair of shoes purchased from its designated men’s, women’s and kids collection, inviting people of all ages throughout the world to take part in reforesting the Earth. Detailed information, including a live tree counter, can be found by visiting the Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree site and watching etnies’ infographic video:

Now in its third year, the Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree program is on track to achieve its 2013 goal of planting 200,000 more trees in Sao Paulo, Brazil through the help of consumers and the brand’s continued reforestation nonprofit partner Trees for the Future.

Bou in search of a seventh title

Reigning champion Toni Bou – Repsol Montesa will relish the opportunity to begin the defence of his crown at the opening Japanese Grand Prix this coming weekend, with the Twin Ring circuit at Motegi being the homeland of Honda by whom he is ultimately employed. The 2013 FIM Trial World Championship will provide the chance for Bou to extend his period of dominance and to go in search of a record equalling seventh successive title. The twenty-six year old from Barcelona, Spain currently is currently one behind Dougie Lampkin and Jordi Tarres, who have each won seven outdoor crowns. Adam Raga – Gas Gas who eventually finished as runner-up to Bou last season, and who recently secured second spot behind Toni in the 2013 FIM X-Trial World Championship would appear to be the main threat to the reigning champion. However, whilst on his day Raga is a match for his compatriot, inconsistency over the last seasons have robbed Raga of a real title challenge. The trip to Japan in 2012 highlights this point with Adam having slumped to sixth and fifth respectively over the two days of competition. Hopefully Raga's strong close to the indoor season will carry forward to the outdoor campaign and he will be able to give Toni a real run for his money right from round one. The other title challengers have a familiar feel with Jeroni Fajado – Beta topping the list having recorded his highest ever ranking by taking third spot, just a single point behind Raga last term. At twenty-eight years old Fajardo is running out of time if he is to progress higher up the order and must make his move in 2013 if he is ever to be considered a real title contender. Age is one thing that does not seem to be a limiting factor when it comes to Albert Cabestany – Sherco and Takahisa Fujinami – Repsol Montesa, with both of the thirty-year old plus protagonists riding as well as they have ever done. Fujinami with his home advantage could just provide the upset of the weekend, especially with his flamboyant approach perhaps best suiting the new no-stop rules. The British pairing of James Dabill – Beta and Jack Challoner – Beta and the newly promoted 2012 FIM Junior Trial World Champion Alexandre Ferrer – Sherco, are sure to lead the charge in terms of breaking up the established top five runners. With Ferrer now in the World Pro category, the way is now clear for Francesc Moret – Gas Gas to go one better this season and take the Junior crown, although he will have to fight off the much fancied Pol Tarres – Sherco, who has switched teams over the winter plus the emerging talent that is the slightly unknown Jorge Casales – Gas Gas. Also 2012 FIM Youth Trial Wold Champion Steve Coquelin – JTG should not be discounted as being a real threat. Bradley Cox – Beta heads the assault to capture the Youth title after having finished as runner-up to Coquelin in the general standings last season. French rider Quentin Carles de Caudemberg - Beta would appear to be Cox's main rival, having closed out 2012 with his best results to date. The fifty-five entries for the opening encounter will see representatives from nine nations take part, with a solid contingent of Japanese riders joining the more regular contenders as they look to play havoc with the form book and go all out for success on home soil. So let battle commence and the new no-stop era roll in, as anticipation is soon to become action.

Why I ride part 3: Lady riders look cool, and I got a pair of HD boots

customsporty

This is Steve’s custom Sportster – the one he took to Bike Night where I first got the idea to ride my own.

Also in this series:
Part One – The Telephone Booth!

Part Two – The Honda Express!

And now, Part Three – Inspiration Boots!

After we got married in 1991, Steve bought and sold a few bikes over the next several years. Then in the late 90′s he got an idea to build a custom bike, and starting with a 1974 Harley Davidson Sportster he made a really cool retro-looking bike that everyone thought was a 50′s or 60′s model.

He’d take it to a popular local bike night to display it, and our daughter and I would follow in the car so we could walk around and look at the bikes. It was on these visits to Bike Night that I first noticed a few (very few!) women riding their own bikes. They looked confident, cool and independent – and I uttered the thought out loud as soon as it occurred to me:

“I wonder if I could learn to ride my own bike.”

Now one type of guy might have said, “No way, it’s too dangerous,” and I might have given up the idea right then and there.

Fortunately, my husband replied, “Sure, you could learn if you wanted to,” and he went out and bought me a pair of HD riding boots for inspiration. Now obviously, wearing the logo of a popular manufacturer doesn’t make one a biker, but I wore them anyway for literally a couple of years, trying to get the vibe before I really got serious about learning to ride.

Early in the Spring of 2002, we heard about a great learner bike being offered for sale by a friend, so we bought it. Now with boots and a bike, there really was nothing holding me back except my own tendency to over-think. It was time, as my mother used to say, to “shit or get off the pot.”

The learner bike was a 1982 Yamaha 250 Exciter commuter bike. Now this is about as nerdy a bike as they come: it had a plastic trunk on the back, had lost one of its side mirrors, and its top speed was about 70 mph. (It sounded like a Singer sewing machine at anything above 50, and you could hear the Wicked Witch of the West’s bicycle-riding music in the background when you rode it.)

I started out riding this bike up and down the driveway and around the front yard. The first day, Steve showed me how to work the clutch: I’d start the bike with the clutch pulled in, and he’d walk backwards down the driveway in front of me as I inched forward by feathering the clutch.

You know how interior decorators talk about using an "inspiration piece," like a rug or pillow, around which to design a room? Well these are my "inspiration boots," a gift from my hubby, around which I designed my desire to learn to ride.

You know how interior decorators talk about using an “inspiration piece,” like a rug or pillow, around which to design a room? Well these are my “inspiration boots,” a gift from my hubby, around which I designed my desire to learn to ride.

After a couple hours of this, I was able to ride the bike in first gear down to the end of the driveway, make a U-turn, and come back. I then progressed to riding circles around the house, and finally Steve rode the bike up to the nearby high school while I followed in the car. Once there, I used the parking lot to learn about shifting gears.

Around this time I also took the first of two tests required of all riders by the State of Iowa: a written “road rules” test. Passed that with no problem, and suddenly I was allowed to ride on the street as long as a licensed rider rode alongside me. (Because presumably, you’re less of a danger to others that way. I’m not sure that makes sense, but that’s the law.)

By late summer, we had a routine of riding up to the parking lot at the school where I could practice, followed by maybe 30 miles or so riding around town together. I was having a blast.

I turned 40 in mid-September that year, and about a month later I took the skills test to get my full license.

That was an adventure in itself. I had diagrams of the exercises required for the test, and was able to lay them out in the driveway and practice, over and over again.

But I hate any kind of graded performance, and although I was very comfortable riding the bike around town and for short stretches on the highway, the thought of having someone watch and score my skills was terrifying.

This is not my actual bike, but it's an example of an 82 Exciter. Sorry I can't credit the photo - when I clicked the Google Images link to see where the photo came from, it popped up a PORN site... with no motorcycle to be found. Just hoo-hoos. Lots of hoo-hoos.

My goal had been to get my license before my birthday. But, due to my fear of testing, the day came and went with nary a licensing attempt having been made.

By the time October came around, I was feeling pretty silly. There was no reason to think I wouldn’t pass the test – I’d been riding all summer – and the season was drawing to a close. So I picked a day and just decided to do it.

Up at the DOT, it was me and six guys. First came the equipment check – we knew the bike needed both side mirrors to pass inspection, so we had snagged one off my bicycle and screwed it into the open hole on top of the handlebars. It wasn’t pretty, but it did the job.

The next potential hurdle was the horn test. The horn on this bike was very, very weak – it sounded like a wounded canary. Fortunately, the license inspector had the group test their horns together so my bike’s sickly bleating went undetected.

When he asked for volunteers to go first, my hand shot up – there was no way I was going to sit here any longer than necessary. I was either going to pass, or go home and practice.

I put my foot down once going through the orange cones, and I don’t think my quick-stop was exactly what he wanted, but I passed. I passed! And with that, Rebel Biker Mom was born.

I started the summer of 2002 as a wannabe with a pair of Harley-Davidson boots and a keen envy of girls who rode their own bikes. I ended that summer with a bike, a license, and a full season of riding adventures and “firsts” already behind me.

Digital technology gives bikers prescription wrap-around sunglasses

Editor’s note: Although I don’t wear prescription eyewear (yet!), I’m sure many of you probably do. I hope this guest post from Michael Spanjol at ADS Sports Eyewear will be encouraging – it sounds like  the technology for wrap-around prescription sunglasses is really improving. This is a compensated post.

by Michael Spanjol

motorcycle_sunglassesPrescription Motorcycle Sunglasses are now available with Free-Form Digital lenses that dramatically enhance a wearer’s field of vision and overall optical clarity. This is one of the biggest advancements in eyewear technology ever. In the past, if you tried putting your prescription into a pair of sunglasses that ‘wrap’ around your face, you would experience a disorienting peripheral distortion known as the “fishbowl” effect. This effect renders the sunglasses useless and is the result of using traditional lens technology that is meant for flat lenses. People who have tried wearing contacts under sunglasses know that they can dry out easily and become a dangerous distraction at times. These problems have been solved with the development of new Free-Form Digitally Surfaced Lenses.

In a free-form digitally surfaced lens the curve is recalculated at every point on the lens. This is helpful in everyday eyewear, but it is critical in the wrapped frames worn by motorcyclists because you do not want a blurred peripheral view or blind spot when you are navigating traffic; it is just too dangerous to be without the sharpest vision available for your peripheral views. A traditional prescription in a wrapped frame will fail you where a Free-Form lens could save your life. Contact lenses can be an irritant in high wind activities making them pale in comparison to the versatility and durability of free-form lenses which can be made Single Vision or Progressive (no line bifocals).

The free-form digital lenses for Motorcycle Sunglasses can be made with one of the two acceptable lens materials for motorcycling and fitted into almost any frame by any brand. The two acceptable shatter-proof materials are Polycarbonate and Trivex. Polycarbonate is the most popular lens material in sports sunglasses. Trivex was developed by the US military as an improvement on Polycarbonate. A version of polarized Trivex, known as SR- 91, costs about 50% more than polycarbonate, but the optics and durability are state-of-the-art. Polycarbonate and Trivex can be tinted to any color, can be polarized, or can feature a transitions lens film. There are no good options that are both polarized and transitions at this time.

Prescription Oakley Sunglasses are now a major player in the Free-Form Motorcycle Sunglasses ring with the recent popularity of their Wind Jacket model. The Wind Jacket features a removable eye seal and very easily exchangeable lenses for those that want more versatility out of their riding sunglasses.

Free-Form Digital prescription lenses for motorcycle sunglasses are a huge step in the right direction when talking about optical clarity and overall safety for motorcyclists. What once took a head-turn to see now only requires a glance.

ADS Sports Eyewear has been selling prescription motorcycle sunglasses and other sport sunglasses for over 10 years. The owner is an avid motorcyclist and certified optician who has performed unbiased testing on motorcycle sunglasses and lens technologies and has trained his staff thoroughly on these topics. They will happily answer all questions you might have on selecting the right pair of shades for any activity.

And we look forward to announcing our music acts in the very near future.”

Honda TT Legends forced to retire

The Honda TT Legends team was forced to retire 18-hours in to the 2013 Bol d'Or 24-hour, breaking its seven-race stint of successful finishes in Endurance World Championship events. The disappointment also marks the first time that the team has had to withdraw from a 24-hour race. John McGuinness started the race for the Honda TT Legends and the first few hours saw him, Simon Andrews and Michael Dunlop put in an impressive performance that took them from 28th to third place. As evening fell on the Magny Cours circuit in France, light rain caused a few incidents for other teams, but the Honda TT Legends settled into a steady fourth place, where they remained through the night until daybreak. Just after 8am, Dunlop made an unexpected pit stop and the Honda TT Legends crew set to work, eventually identifying and fixing a problem with the heat exchanger. McGuinness re-joined the race in 13th place but unfortunately the irreparable damage to the engine had already been done and it subsequently overheated. He was forced to dismount and push the bike back to the pits on the first lap and the team retired from the race. The EWC will continue with the Suzuka 8-hour in Japan on 28 July. Neil Tuxworth This is a very disappointing end for the team after all the hard work and effort everyone has put in. It's unfortunate but we had a problem with the heat exchanger which caused the engine to overheat and fail towards the end of the race. It's our first incomplete event in seven races and our first ever retirement from a 24 hour race, but it happens to everyone at some point and the main thing is that everyone is ok. We haven't had any injuries to anybody and although there was some leakage from the bike, it doesn't look like it caused problems to anybody else as the safety car came out very quickly. Like I say, very disappointing for everyone but we have to move on and look forward to the road races coming up in the next few months. John McGuinness We're just gutted not to have finished. The lads have done so much work on the bike – new electronics, traction control – all sorts of bits and pieces that they've spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on. We've had a fantastic run of results up to now with seven races completed and we were looking good in the race. We were top five again and chipping away, but unfortunately we had a problem 18 hours in. I'm just speechless really, just gutted, but we'll try and take the positives out of it. We were running a lot closer to some of our rivals so we can take that to the next round. Simon Andrews It had gone well up until that point. I did a good few stints at the beginning to get us up to fourth and I was happy enough with that. It's a shame what's happened for everyone because the guys have worked so hard. The chassis was working well and we had the quickest bike out there at some points, so it just would have been nice to reward everyone with a podium. We were third at one stage so to go from that position to coming away with no points at all is not fun, but that's endurance racing. We can be happy with the hard work we've put in and the way we've worked together and we'll look forward to the next round. Michael Dunlop It's so disappointing for all the lads after all the hard work they've done. I really feel for them because it's not just about us riders, it's a massive team effort and they put so much into it. I just got my head down and got on with it, going with the flow really. It was going well up until that point, but we'll go back and take a look at the bike and come back bigger and stronger next time.

Long Ruts on Straights

Nothing reminds me of motocross more than a rutted up, fast, flowing track.  This is the pinnacle obstacle that separates the men from the boys.  If you watched Southwick this past weekend, then you saw the insane ruts in the moist New England sand.  Most beginners find themselves nervous approaching long ruts and often end up on the ground.  It doesn’t matter if a rut is in a corner, on a straight or on the face of a jump, you will encounter one sooner or later.  Some look at this as a burden, but you can actually use these to your advantage.

A lot of people can go fast on a straightaway.  It’s pretty simple; open the throttle as far as possible.  That’s generally how ruts get formed on straights.  People actually use the power of their bikes and it trenches out the soil.  Obviously, the main line will get dug the deepest.  In the beginning of the day, this won’t be a bad choice to use.  It just depends on how it sets you up for the next section.  However, a majority of the time, the main line usually gets too deep and ends up slowing you down.

When the whole straight gets rutted out, things start to get a little tricky.  The middle of the track is going to have deeper ruts than the edges of the track.  So, by taking the edges of the track, you can avoid the choppy mess made by the slower riders and you can save your energy for more important times in the moto.

As with any rut, approaching it with both wheels in line is very important.  You want to keep both wheels in the rut, preventing you from getting cross rutted.  You also maintain your momentum and forward drive, as well.  Once, you have both wheels lined up, keeping your head up and vision ahead is very important.  Staring at the ground right in front of you will only send you one place, the dirt.  That is not where you want to be.  A good guide is to keep your vision a few bike lengths ahead of you.  The faster you go, the further you want to look.

Depending on how deep the ruts are, a good idea is to ride on the balls of your feet (and point your toes in, gripping the cases).  This prevents your feet from getting caught in the rut and ripping your leg off the peg.  As always, you want to be gripping the bike with your knees and applying steady, consistent throttle.  As you get to the end of the straight, there are more than likely going to be braking bumps.  This is where you want to start shifting your weight back slightly to keep you from going over the bars.

Like I said, if you can conquer ruts, you can conquer anything.  It is mind over matter and just keeping good form and looking ahead.  Stay loose and relax; you’ll get through them sooner than you think.

Another Bol d'Or win for SRC Kawasaki

After winning at the wire in 2012, SRC Kawasaki triumphs again at the Bol d'Or with a 9-lap lead over Monster Energy Yamaha YART and 11 laps clear of the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (SERT). Riding the official Kawasaki, Gregory Leblanc, Loris Baz and Jérémy Guarnoni put together a perfectly crafted but exhausting race. The tricky conditions with intermittent showers on Saturday afternoon reshuffled the leading pack. To hold on to the lead, SRC Kawasaki put up a hard fight against the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team early in the race as well as with the Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube, which just missed the podium after being hit by electronic woes at the end of the race. But Kudos goes to David Checa, Kenny Foray and Matthieu Lagrive who battled it out with the Kawasaki at the front for nearly 20 hours. By taking pole position and going on to win, the SRC Kawasaki handed in a flawless card at Magny-Cours. However, the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team seemed an unlikely candidate for the podium after crashes by Anthony Delhalle and Vincent Philippe as a result of bad tyre choices early on in the race. But Dominique Méliand's crew, who were lying back in 30th four hours into the race, showed their guts and determination. Lap after lap, they came up the field and, helped at the end by the misfortunes that befell Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube, a relieved Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Julien Da Costa hauled themselves on to the third step of the podium, saving vital points for Suzuki in the overall standings. Monster Energy Yamaha YART was in the leading pack from start to finish. Igor Jerman, Broc Parkes and Sheridan Morais did not put a foot wrong but were unable to take the race to the Kawasaki. The Austrian Yamaha ran a prudent race after putting together its final crew at the last moment, and Sheridan Morais, who stepped in to replace an injured Josh Waters, had his first ride on the Yamaha at Magny Cours. So three makers were on the podium, paired with three different tyre manufacturers: Kawasaki-Pirelli in first, followed by Yamaha-Michelin and Suzuki-Dunlop. BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent fell by the wayside when Sébastien Gimbert, Sylvain Barrier and Karl Muggeridge had to throw in the towel at dusk. Two early crashes had left the motorcycle too damaged to go on. Honda TT Legends fell behind the leading pack with engine trouble on Sunday morning, leaving the top Honda spot for National Motos. Slowed down by a crash, Gregory Junod, Michael Rutter and Olivier Four finished in 8th after holding on to a place in the top 5. Team R2CL, who moved up the field as the race went on, were able to take 7th at the finish with avec Guillaume Dietrich, Gwen Giabbani and Dylan Buisson. In the race for the FIM Endurance World Cup, Junior Team Suzuki LMS chalked up another win. Baptiste Guittet, Etienne Masson and Nans Chevaux finished a respectable 5th and 1st in Superstock just behind the top teams. This category saw a close-run fight with Penz13.com Franks Autowelt Racing Team (BMW) finishing just behind Junior Team Suzuki. Team Motors Events April Moto (Suzuki) came in 3rd in Superstock ahead of the Suzukis of Starteam Pam Racing and AM Moto Racing Compétition, kept off the podium as a result of a crash. The next leg of the FIM Endurance World Championship will be the Suzuka 8 Hours in Japan on 28 July.

Stewart injury out of 2012 AMA supercross for now

James Stewart’s crash at Indianapolis will prevent him from racing this weekend at Toronto. James has been

under observation over the last few days and has stated that the crash “aggravated a couple old injuries and I’ll need time to fully recover from that”

James will continue to work hard on recovery and will re-evaluate is injuries and race readiness before Houston. But for now he is not ready to compete at the level required. “’I wouldn’t be able push myself at the pace needed to run with the guys out there”
