The Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha team experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as round two of the Australian Supercross championship unfolded in front of a huge crowd gathered at Phillip Island.
The supercross event, ran in conjunction with the Moto GP, saw Luke Styke go down in the opening laps of the Pro Lites final with a suspected broken left wrist while team mate Luke Clout charged his way back from an early fall to finish the race in a very impressive fifth place. After finishing third at the opening round, Styke came into round two feeling confident and ready to go. He posted fast qualifying times and also took a heat race victory throughout the day. But things unravelled in the second corner of the race when he tipped over in a tight berm. He then mounted a charge and tried to make his way back through the field, only to fall heavily again a few laps later and walk from the circuit holding his left wrist and as a result, was unable to finish the race. It was a bitter blow for Styke and the Serco team who looked at have a good shot at winning the championship.
Fortunes were reversed for Luke Clout, who crashed in his heat races leading to him making the main event via the dreaded, last chance qualifier. Once in the main, his luck didn’t change and he again was involved in a crash early in the race. But, Clout didn’t quit and started his charge back through the field. He managed to pass his way forward regularly and by the time the race was over, Clout found himself in fifth place in an impressive ride.
“That was twice today that I got caught up in other riders’ problems. The crash in the heat race happened when another rider fell into me that led to the LCQ and therefore a bad pick of the start gate for the main. I then thought I had a good start from out wide but the field pushed through the first turn and again bikes just seemed to fall to the outside where I was leaving me no place to go. It was good to get back through the field and I had no idea where I was coming. I’m happy with fifth, but at the same time, would like to have a clear race with no problems just to see where I can finish.” – Clout
Styke is unlikely to line up at the final two rounds with his wrist injury expected to side line him for at least four to six weeks. His absence will see Clout going solo in the Serco rig for the final two rounds.
