Bradl promises to learn from error

Stefan BradlStefan Bradl has pledged to learn from his Assen MotoGP error and get among the frontrunners again in his home race at Germany’s Sachsenring next weekend.

The German qualified a MotoGP career-best fourth in the Netherlands and held that position at the start, only to crash out on lap two.

“I do not have so much to say,” said reigning Moto2 champion Bradl. “Yesterday we obtained a very good grid position and today I took another good start.

“In the first laps the feeling with the bike was great and I could easily close the little gap to [Ben] Spies.

“I do not remember last time I had such a good feeling in the first laps but I have to be honest: probably I was too aggressive in braking into Turn 10 and I crashed. It’s my mistake and I am very sorry for the guys. Today we could have got a very positive result.”

The LCR Honda rider said he was pleased to have at least shown he could match the MotoGP leaders.

“Now I want to learn from my mistakes, making another step forward ahead of my home race,” Bradl said. “The potential is there and we are capable of racing with the top riders.”

Lorenzo rues final-lap mistake

Jorge Lorenzo, Yamaha, Assen 2012Jorge Lorenzo blamed a mistake at the chicance on his final qualifying lap for his failure to claim pole position for the Assen MotoGP race.

The world championship leader will start third in the Dutch TT, behind his Honda-riding title rivals Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa, after a spectacular final sprint for pole once rain showers cleared.

On his final lap, Lorenzo had been slightly ahead of Stoner’s time at the first splits, but reckoned he cost himself a lot of time at the final corner. His time ended up being 0.288 seconds off pole.

“Today the rain made our lives a little difficult in the morning and the afternoon. Finally we could go full throttle in the last five minutes trying to get pole position,” said Lorenzo.

“I tried two laps. On the last lap, I was really fast, but I braked too late at the chicane so I lost maybe two or three tenths and I wasn’t able to make the pole position.

“But third position is a good place to start tomorrow.”

Lorenzo looked like a strong favourite for a fourth straight race win after showing impressive form in Thursday practice, but with a 25-point championship lead, he said his priority for Saturday was to ensure a good points haul.

“The important thing is to finish the race and get points, and to have a good feeling with the bike,” he said.

“It seems we have that this weekend, so let’s see tomorrow.”

IndyCar brings back ‘push to pass’

Long Beach IndyCarIndyCar will reintroduce its ‘push to pass’ overtaking aid for the five remaining road and street courses on the 2012 schedule, starting with next weekend’s Toronto round.

Series technical boss Will Phillips said that the system would be similar to that used when it was originally introduced in 2009.

“It will be similar to what it was in the past because we know that model worked,” he said.

The amount of additional boost and the amount of time that the extra boost will be available will be pre-determined by the series, and will vary depending upon the circuit.

Recharge time and any delays between activations will also be set by the series, although engine manufacturers will be able to make specific adjustments to tailor the system to their engine.

As part of the introduction of push to pass, the base turbo boost level will drop to 150 kPa, and increase by 10 kPa when the system is engaged.

Teams will have an opportunity to test the system early in the Toronto race weekend.

Exclusive: A look inside the Volkswagen Group Electronics Research Laboratory

Manufacturers realized long ago that the most effective way to leverage niche talent was to embed a team in the heart of the segment. From surfboard makers to chocolatiers, firms relocated offices to seek specific talents and a better local feel.

Automakers jumped on the bandwagon too. Southern California, long recognized for its fanatical car culture, became a mecca for automakers seeking to get a better taste of the region's motor vehicle passion. In no time, automakers had established Southern California design studios in places like Camarillo (Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center), Newbury Park (BMW DesignworksUSA) and San Diego (Nissan Design America). Cars like the BMW "E46" 3 Series, Nissan 370Z and Volvo's S80 are products of those facilities.

Today, with innovative electronics and forward thinking every bit as important as design, automakers are maneuvering to get a jump on the next big innovation. No place on the planet is more synonymous with high tech than Northern California's Silicon Valley. Located in Belmont, in the heart of the region, is the Volkswagen Group Electronics Research Laboratory. Established in August of 1998 with just three employees, the lab is tasked with "developing innovation and technologies for future generations of cars and to transfer technologies from many industries into the automotive domain." Just think of it as VW's version of Walt Disney Imagineering, but for automotive geeks.

The automaker recently invited us north to take a tour of its facility, touted as the Volkswagen Group's largest research facility outside of Germany. Read on to learn more about what we saw.

First Drive: 2013 Honda Fit EV [w/video]

Reminding Us That EVs Are Becoming Less Of A Compromise

2013 Honda Fit EV - front three-quarter view, static

The 2013 Honda Fit EV, the Japanese automaker's highly anticipated answer to the Nissan Leaf, is quick, agile and actually quite fun to drive. Its cabin is roomy, outward visibility good and its styling is anything but odd. The platform is impressively safe, it has decent range and Honda says it is the most efficient vehicle the EPA has ever tested.

So, what's the problem? Let's call it a lack of volume.

Honda is only releasing 1,100 of these little blue hatchbacks over the next two model years in the States, and all of them will be delivered on contracted three-year leases. Making matters more frustrating for those who want to forget about internal combustion, only California and Oregon are in the launch plans with five other preselected East Coast markets opening shortly thereafter.

Statistically speaking, the Honda Fit EV will initially be scarcer than a Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 (the Italians are estimating a production run of approximately 4,000 worldwide). But thankfully, Honda brought a handful of pre-production Fit EVs to Southern California and offered us a drive. We ran acceleration tests, dodged cones on a slalom course and then did some real-world driving. Dwelling on its pending shortage, it was almost frustrating that we enjoyed ourselves so much.

Boxer Confirms: Some Bike/Ped Protections Remain in Final Bill [Updated]

Sen. Barbara Boxer just issued the statement below. It confirms that “half of the funds for bike paths and pedestrian walkways [will be allocated] directly to local entities,” as spelled out in the Cardin-Cochran amendment. Update: It appears that the “opt-out” provision for states only applies to the half that they control, after local governments have their say. However, that’s still a blow to street safety compared to the Cardin-Cochran provision passed by the Senate, which required states to hold a competitive grant process to distribute their half of the funds.

Meanwhile, here’s the statement:

I am so glad that House Republicans met Democrats half way, as Senate Republicans did months ago.

The bill is funded at current levels, and it will protect and create three million jobs. This job creation is the critical focus of Democrats, because we know that the unemployment rate in construction is at an unacceptable level.

We speed up project delivery, cut red tape, and do it without jeopardizing environmental laws. For the first time, we send half of the funds for bike paths and pedestrian walkways directly to local entities, and we protect those funds while giving states more flexibility on their share.

Our country needs the kind of economic boost that this bill offers, and I am looking forward to getting it to the President’s desk.

It is ironic that in June 1956 the Senate passed its first highway bill, and thanks to the work of many committees and all parties, we will not allow that great history of our interstate transportation system to disappear.

Richard Childress Racing driver leads a NNS track record 192 laps

SPARTA, Ky. – Austin Dillon decimated a 43-driver NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Feed The Children 300 field at Kentucky Speedway by leading a series track record 192 of 200 race laps en route to seizing his first series victory in his No. 3 Richard Childress Racing (RCR) car.

Dillon became the seventh NNS driver to earn a victory in a series track debut and set a new series track record for largest margin of victory when he crossed the finish line 9.828 seconds ahead of Kurt Busch in the No. 54 Kyle Busch Motorsports machine.

The 25-year-old Dillon started from the pole position and set the tone for his untouchable performance by leading the opening 81 laps. The No. 3 cycled out of the lead only twice during pit stops and closed out the stellar run by holding point for the closing 56 circuits.

“I was actually loose the whole race. I just kept getting looser and looser. I was just really driving as straight as I could trying not to slit the tires. I kind of back-steered the whole race, but that last adjustment he (Crew Chief Danny Stockman Jr.) made got me tight enough to fire off really good. We knew Kurt (Busch) was good, but our car was just stronger tonight,” said Dillon, who snared his eighth top-five finish of the season and a two-point lead in the championship standings over his teammate Elliott Sadler.

Kurt Busch earned his first Kentucky Speedway NNS top-five finish in his first series start at the track. He owns a combined six top-five and 10 top-10 series finishes this season.

I thought it was a great battle for us tonight. We started out really loose, but (Crew Chief) Mike Beam and his experience and leadership brought us to the front to contend for the lead. That being said, Austin Dillon was in another zip code. Congratulations to him, Richard Childress and his team on Austin’s first Nationwide win.

“The track was really hot today for qualifying and then really cooled off for the race. We knew that the track was going to get loose but we still were just a little behind on the setup. It is my first Nationwide race here at Kentucky.  To come home with a runner-up finish is something that the team can be proud of and build on,” Busch said.

Kevin Harvick took third in the No. 33 Kevin Harvick, Inc., car, Michael Annett claimed fourth in the No. 43 Turner Motorsports car and Justin Allgaier rounded out the race top five in the No. 31 Turner Motorsports car.

NOTE: NASCAR officials announced that Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Richard Childress Racing car which won tonight’s NASCAR Nationwide Series Feed The Children 300 at Kentucky Speedway failed postrace inspection because the car’s heights were too low in the rear. A penalty will be issued.

Vincent and Hastings win at Spa

Nineteen members of the Red Sox Racing League traveled to Francorchamps, Belgium for the “Armco Crash Barriers Presents Circuit De Spa 30″at the world famous Circuit De Spa-Francorchamps road course of the seventh race in the 2012 Season Two schedule.  The track’s modern configuration offers a scenic 4.35 mile layout containing nineteen corners.  Home to more than 40 Grands Prix, an annual 24 hours endurance race, and the Fun Cup’s 25 Hours of Spa, the twisting and hilly track is one of the most technically challenging circuits in the world.

Brad Vincent, leader of the Class A HPD championship points race, arrived in Belgium with an impressive six race winning streak and confident his success would continue at Spa.  Corey Hastings, leader of the Class B Corvette championship points race, has six straight top-5 finishes, but was yet to score a win.

Vincent’s qualifying lap time of 2:05.547 nudged out Les Turner’s 2:05.957 for the Class A pole.  John Koscielniak, Terry Daul, and Jeff Sharp, Andrew Feldman, Divina Galica, William Kabela, David Weiss, Ed Sutcliff, Joshua Friedrichs, and Terry Schmidt completed the HPD grid.  Schmidt was forced to begin the race from pit road after failing to post a qualifying time.

Leading the Class B field, Patrick Guerin secured his fourth pole in a row with a lap time of 2:14.669.   Corey Hastings was almost as quick with a lap time of 2:14.701.  Tommy Rhyne, Scott Husted, Casey Carpeniere, Dean Moll, and Greg Harris completed the Corvette grid.

With nearly perfect weather and track conditions, drivers were eager to start racing when the green flag finally waved.  Seasoned drivers knew the race would not be won in the opening laps, but that fact did not prevent several from pressing the point in the early going in the hopes of creating the extra space needed to recover from mistakes.

Perhaps too eager to make up ground, Harris lost control of his car entering turn fourteen after venturing too far over the curb.  Harris tried valiantly to correct the car, but spun off track and backwards into the outside wall.  Despite his damage, Harris was able to continue driving, but was soon forced to retire after hard impact at Raidillon.  Harris was able to walk away from the accident, but was still sore after the race.  “I don’t think I’ve ever been in a wreck that violent.  The car is a complete loss.  I’m glad nobody else got caught up in our mess.”

Schmidt was the next driver to lose focus and suffer the consequences.  In hot pursuit of Sutcliff  and Friedrichs battling for a top 10 position Terry spun the tires exiting La Source and made light contact with the inside wall exiting the corner.

Vincent gave up the lead to Turner on lap five when he spun sideways across the track while getting up to speed exiting the chicane.  Undamaged, Vincent was able to rejoin the racing action once Turner got past him.  A lap later, Moll lost his chance for a podium finish when he spun at Les Combes and allowed Husted by for third.

Vincent nearly regained the lead on lap seven, but again had trouble in the chicane when his brakes appeared to fail and he overshot turn eighteen.  Turner and Koscielniak both blew past Vincent as he recovered from the mistake and dove into the pits to top up his brake fluid reservoir.

Sharp, Feldman, and Weiss entered the pits nose to tail on the next lap.  Feldman brushed the inside wall but got away with only cosmetic damage.  He then overshot his pit stall and was forced to reverse his car in order to take service.  The seconds he lost cost him his best chance to get past Sharp who ran a solid race.  Daul inherited the HPD lead when Turner and Koscielniak pitted on lap nine.

Daul would have surrendered the lead to Turner when he pitted on lap eleven, but mistakes by several drivers upset the running order before the lead change could occur.  Turner’s chance for his first win of the season was foiled by the black cloud of bad luck which has been following him all season long.  Entering turn fifteen with Vincent a mere four seconds behind, Turner tried to pass Husted’s Corvette.  Entering the corner 20 mph faster than Husted, Turner had no time to react when the two drivers both went for the same spot on the track at the same instant.

Vincent could not have scripted a better story line for his seventh win of the season.  Far enough behind the Turner/Husted incident to see both cars sliding off course, Vincent never lifted as he powered through the corner and regained the lead position.  Daul was 20 seconds behind the leader after his pit service on lap 10 but his chances for a podium finish ended on his out lap when he overshot turn 14 and allowed Sharp through.  Feldman ducked in behind Daul, who fought back and regained 4th position from Sharp on the following lap.  But by then he was too far back to challenge Koscielniak for 3rd.

Class A results

Vincent overcame several uncharacteristic mistakes to earn his seventh win in a row.  His twelve second margin of victory over Koscielniak was impressive given the time he lost early in the race.  Koscielniak scored his 6th podium in 6 outings, and finished 2nd for the fourth time this season.  Turner recovered from his late race incident to cross the line in third place.

The battle for the forth through seventh positions was hotly contested, as all four drivers crossed the line within four seconds of each other.  Daul secured 4th place when he made a daring pass on Sharp as the two drivers barreled through turns sixteen and seventeen on lap twelve.  A lap earlier Sharp slid wide in the chicane nearly letting Daul and Feldman through, but he was able to regain control of his car and rejoin the track to complete the corner and maintain his lead over Daul and Feldman.

Sharp hung on for 5th place, barely beating Feldman (6th) and Weiss (7th) to the line.  Weiss gained 2 positions from his 9th starting position to finish 7th, but several off track incidents prevented him from moving higher.  Friedrichs (8th), Galica (9th), Sutcliff (10th), Kabela (11th), and Schmidt (12th), completed the HPD scoring.  Kabela was the only HPD driver to complete the race without incident.

Vincent enjoys a nineteen point lead over Daul in the championship battle.  Turner, Koscielniak, and Feldman round out the top five championship spots.

Class B results

Hastings completed the race without incident and just held off Rhyne and Guerin to win his first race of the season.  The Spa finish produced one of the closest 1-2-3 Corvette finishes in RSR history, as all three drivers were within sight of each other at the finish line.  Rhyne and Guerin both led laps during the event, but neither could get past Hastings once he took the lead on lap 10.  “Our car felt great again tonight” said Hastings.  “It has been a rocket all season long, so I was not surprised to finally get it into Victory Lane!”

Rhyne did everything humanly possible to stay with Hastings, but fell just a bit short at Spa.  “It felt good to be back on the podium after the Watkins Glen race.  Congrats to Corey on his first win!” Guerin also finished the race without an incident and was pleased with his third place showing.  It was his forth podium finish of the season.

Moll (4th), Husted (5th), Harris (6th), and Carpentiere (7th), completed the Corvette scoring.

Hastings increased his lead over Husted to sixteen points in the championship race.  Moll, Rhyne, and Guerin round out the top five.

RSR returns to action at the at the Mosport Road Course in Canada for the “Strawberry Fields Festival at Mosport 30″ on June 28, 2012.

HRT gives Clos British GP practice run

Dani Clos, HRT, Catalunya 2012Dani Clos will return to the cockpit of the HRT at Silverstone next week after the team announced he will take part in opening practice for the British Grand Prix.

The Spaniard, who had his first outing with the team on home soil at Barcelona last month, will replace Narain Karthikeyan for free practice one.

Speaking about his opportunity, Clos said: “I’m very happy to step into the F112 once again in Silverstone, a place where I’ve got good memories since I’ve made the podium every time I’ve been in GP2. After Barcelona I’ve really been looking forward to this new opportunity.

“The work we’re carrying out with the team is positive and I think that I can make a good contribution. I will be able to run in better conditions than in Barcelona because the car was new back then and I had to carry out various aero tests. Now I’ve got a new opportunity, not to prove anything but to work with the team and evolve as much as we can.”

IndyCar won’t replace Chinese race

This year’s IndyCar Series will remain at 15 races after series organisers decided not to replace its planned Chinese event.

It was announced on June 13 that the Qingdao street race, scheduled to take place on August 19, would not go ahead, reducing the calendar from 16 events to 15.

Since then a number of alternative venues have been suggested as replacements, with both oval and road courses considered.

But on Monday, IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard confirmed that there would be no further adjustments to the scheduld this year.

“After carefully considering all possible options for an additional race, we felt it was in our best interest to keep our schedule at its current 15-event lineup,” said Bernard.

“We want to make sure that when we add events to our roster they have long-term potential and are given every opportunity to be successfully promoted. The more we explored, the more we felt like we were rushing what could be good, long-lasting opportunities for the sport.

“I thank all of the promoters who entertained the possibility of hosting the IndyCar Series this season. It certainly validated what we already knew – there’s a lot of interest from venues across North America in hosting our sport.”

That is the view of Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali, who believes the fact that the Valencia triumph owed more to his driver’s stunning efforts to charge through the field than having a dominant car needs to be taken as a sign that things still need to improve at Maranello.

“The car is at another level from what we were seeing at the beginning of the season, but it is not yet the car that is the quickest,” explained Domenicali, who saw Alonso become the first double winner of the 2012 campaign.

“In my view Red Bull, or the Red Bull that I have seen this weekend, is the quickest in terms of pure performance. In the race it was leading comfortably, the pace was very strong. That is something that we need to look at,

“We know what our target is at the end of November, so we know that, in my view, they did something very good this weekend, and they improved the car. They had problems with reliability, but we are not, in my view, at the level that we should be in terms of the performance.

“So we have a lot to do, but we are leading the championship and that is something that will be very helpful for the people at home to keep working with more creativity and ideas.”

Red Bull Racing introduced a dramatic update to its RB8 in Valencia – with the car featuring a heavily revised sidepod, diffuser and rear suspension configuration.

Those improvements helped Sebastian Vettel take a dominant pole position, and seize control of the race before being forced out with an alternator problem.

Vettel’s retirement left the way open for his rivals to take advantage, and it was Alonso’s great efforts – which included a brave move past Romain Grosjean after a safety car restart – to take an emotional victory.

When Domenicali was asked if Alonso ever surprised him, he replied: “We know he is the number one driver. That’s the reason why he is here with us.

“I am very happy for him because he had such a pressure. Certain feelings you have just watching the eyes of a man that you know. So I was really so happy from my heart to see him fight like this. And I am also happy for the team because they were working in terms of the right strategy and the right calls; this is the strength of our team.

“But as I said, we need to stay cool, calm. This victory is very important because our main rivals in the championship had some problems. Reliability is a key factor this year, and you need to score points every time.”

Spies sanguine about MotoGP future

Ben SpiesBen Spies says he is ‘calm’ about his MotoGP future and will focus on turning his current campaign around rather than worrying too much about 2013 deals.

The American’s factory Yamaha contract is up at the end of 2012, and his future has been subject of intense speculation amid a difficult season. Spies is currently only 11th in the world championship, with just one top-five finish to his name.

Yamaha recently announced that it would retain Spies’ team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, putting more pressure on the other riders at the centre of the ‘silly season’, but Spies says he is sanguine about his situation.

“It’s normal. It’s racing. As soon as Jorge signed, everyone was in a big scramble, and that’s how it works,” he said.

“All I can do is worry about me and my bike and my results. Whatever happens, happens, and I’m calm about that. We’ll go about our business and get everything done, and let the cards fall where they fall.”

With three races in as many weekends looming as MotoGP heads for back to back races at Assen, the Sachsenring and Mugello, Spies believes the next stage of the season offers him a chance to revitalise his campaign – especially as he showed better pace at Catalunya and Silverstone.

“Hopefully we can take some of the confidence we did get from Silverstone and apply it here and keep going for the three weeks,” said Spies.

“It’s an important part of the season. It can make up for a lot of the lost ground. Generally feeling confident and being able to attack these three weekends is really important.”

Spies took his sole MotoGP victory at Assen last season, and admitted that should he win this weekend, he was likely to kick himself for having not delivered sooner.

“Taking a victory this weekend after the way the season’s been going, I’d almost be a little bit pissed off because it hasn’t been happening recently, not any good results,” he said.

“It’s not bad luck, there have been a lot of little things going on, but that’s the way it goes. You’ve got to remind yourself of the last 10 years you’ve been racing and what you’ve done, and things don’t always go to plan. Sometimes you have a bad season, sometimes you have a bad three races.

“The last three or four weeks, we’ve been going better and getting a lot more confidence with the bike. The last race at Silverstone was pretty good. We faded a bit at the end, but the beginning was good and the bike felt good.

“Now we’re back here, which is one of my favourite tracks. I look forward to this weekend and I’m just trying to get another good result and build my confidence up.”

Rossi pleased with Ducati pace

Valentino Rossi, Ducati, 2012Valentino Rossi was pleased with Ducati’s pace after MotoGP free practice at Assen, but admitted that tyre wear over a race distance was again a concern.

Ducati struggled to make its tyres last in the preceding grand prix at Silverstone, where Rossi was a distant ninth and his team-mate Nicky Hayden fell back to seventh after a promising start.

Hayden was third in the Netherlands on Thursday, while Rossi was back in eighth but pleased to be within 0.4 seconds of pacesetter Ben Spies’ Yamaha.

“Today went pretty well, especially in the afternoon. I’m eighth, but the gap to the front is only four tenths, which is a decent step forward for us,” said Rossi.

The former champion said sustaining that speed in Saturday’s race was his only worry.

“Now the bike works well with new tyres, but we have to keep working on our race pace,” Rossi said. “Both Nicky and I start sliding a lot when the tyre is worn, so we have to slow down too much compared to the others.

“Tomorrow, in order to be more consistent and improve the pace, we must try to improve rear grip without losing it at the front. Anyway, today wasn’t a bad start.”

Official: Pikes Peak Hill Climb postponed due to Colorado wildfire

Filed under:

2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The 90th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been officially postponed after race officials met with the U.S. Forest Service yesterday afternoon. The event was originally scheduled to run on July 8th, with technical inspections starting July 3rd, but a wildfire in the area, which began on June 23rd, is less than five percent contained and has currently burned over 18,500 acres. The decision to postpone the race was less about direct interference with the fire - the blaze is currently heading away from Pikes Peak - and more about taking away resources desperately needed by the city of Colorado Springs and the surrounding area.

"At the end of our meeting today, it was clear that we would not be able to go as scheduled," said Tom Osborne, Chairman of the Board of the PPIHC, in a statement released yesterday. "Our deepest concern is for the safety of the public and the competitors, and it was obvious that several agencies charged with public safety would not be able to commit the resources and manpower required to ensure those requirements because of the critical need for their resources at this time. Our city is in an unprecedented struggle right now and we are deeply sensitive to it."

The 211 competitors, many of them from outside the United States, have already been notified of the event's postponement, and a new date will hopefully be selected within the next two weeks. Race officials have assured that any tickets already purchased will still be honored and all agreements with sponsors and vendors will be fulfilled.

You can read the official announcement from the PPIHC below.

Stoner: Tyre woes hurting title bid

Casey StonerCasey Stoner says it will be an achievement just to keep the title race alive into the closing stages of the 2012 MotoGP season given the disadvantage he feels his Honda team is now at with the latest specification Bridgestone tyre.

Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo now leads Stoner by 25 points in the championship after three straight race wins, while reigning champion Stoner feels Bridgestone’s recent change of front tyre has exacerbated Honda’s chatter issues to the point where it will now be hard to win the title.

“Unfortunately with this new tyre, we felt from the first moment we tested it that it made things a lot worse,” said Stoner. “On the spec tyres that we were running last year, we didn’t have any chatter. Then we put on this year’s spec tyre and immediately got chatter. That the updated version made everything worse again.

“Every step Bridgestone has taken has made things a lot more complicated for us, but I suppose it makes the challenge bigger and if we can at least take the fight for the championship towards the end then I think it will be a great achievement because everything’s sort of stacking up against us at the moment.”

Stoner feels Honda’s deficit is relatively small, but is proving costly, and hopes he can improve the situation with minor changes.

“We’ve had a tough last few races, things haven’t really gone to plan,” he said. “We’ve given it everything we have, but the results haven’t been what we wanted.

“We’ve had a couple of opportunities where I thought we could’ve done better – maybe if I just did things a little bit differently in the race and things like that. But in general, I can’t complain. We’ve still been on the podium, we’ve still been getting good points.

“It makes things tough for this second part of the season, but in general we’re happy with our performance. We just need to pick up our pace a little bit and be more comfortable with the bike.”

Red Bull drops Williamson for de Costa

Lewis WilliamsonRed Bull has announced that it has dropped Lewis Williamson from its junior programme, replacing the Scot with GP3 racer Antonio Felix da Costa.

Williamson was only 5 races into his career as a fully-fledged Red Bull Junior, after first becoming involved with the energy drinks firm on the eve of his GP3 campaign in 2011.

He was brought into the scheme fully for 2012, and placed into Formula Renault 3.5 with category newcomer Arden Caterham. However, after failing to score a point in the opening five races of the year, he has been replaced by Portuguese racer da Costa.

A statement from Red Bull said Williamson “has not had the success everyone expected this year in the Renault 3.5 series that is seen as a direct step into Formula 1, the step that was taken in last year by Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne. It is a brutally competitive business.”

Da Costa, who sits ninth in the GP3 standings where he is racing for Carlin, will take over the Arden Caterham Red Bull car from this weekend’s Nurburgring round.

“I’m very proud to become the second Portuguese in the Red Bull Junior Team after Felipe Albuquerque,” said the 20-year-old. “I’m also aware of the great expectations in this, the world’s best advancement programme, and I’m going to do everything possible to justify this trust.

“Of course I already know the Nurburgring from several races in my past, and it’s a perfect spot for my debut with Red Bull.”

Schumacher investigated over DRS use

Michael Schumacher, MercedesMichael Schumacher’s podium finish in the European Grand Prix is under investigation after the German was summoned to see the stewards to explain why he used his DRS in a yellow flag zone at the end of the race.

Schumacher secured the first top three finish since he returned to F1, but he may not keep the result if the stewards deem that he was wrong to have used the DRS in the closing stages of the race while yellow flags were out.

Sebastian Vettel was penalised for using DRS under yellow at the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this year.

Mark Webber, who finished right behind Schumacher on the road, complained about his Mercedes rival’s actions – and Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner said he hoped the stewards would take action over the matter.

“I am sure the stewards are having a good look at it, because if you look at it, it is pretty clear,” explained Horner. “Mark was very vocal on the radio that Michael had used the DRS and there is very clearly a yellow flag on the right hand side once Michael had it open.

“We know from bitter experience that you are not allowed to use it. Seb had a drive through in Barcelona, so it is really up to the stewards.”

Although video evidence suggests that Schumacher’s DRS was open when yellows were out, sources suggest that the German driver had actually slowed for the warning flags as is requested by the regulations.

Kristensen set for Spa 24 Hours debut

Tom Kristensen Audi ILMC Imola 2011Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen is to make his debut in the Spa 24 Hours in the last weekend of July.

The 44-year-old Dane, an eight-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours, will join recent double la Sarthe winners and Audi team-mates Marcel Fassler and Andre Lotterer in one of Team Phoenix’s R8 LMS ultras.

“I’m hugely excited, because it’s something completely new for me,” said Kristensen. “I’ve not driven the Audi R8 LMS ultra in a race before. And I haven’t actually ever competed in any other 24 hour race apart from Le Mans.

“I’m competing together with Andre [Lotterer] and Marcel [Fassler] for the first time. They’re two excellent team-mates and they’ve just recently won in Le Mans.

“Audi Sport Team Phoenix is strong too, as it recently showed with its victory in the Nurburgring 24 Hours.

“We call our team manager Ernst Moser ‘The Pusher,’ because that’s what he does – he really works hard and pushes us as far as we can go. We’ll set ourselves high aims and then we’ll see how we do.”

Audi will have four R8s in the Belgian endurance classic – a sister Phoenix car driven by Andrea Piccini, Rene Rast, and Nurburgring 24 Hours winner Frank Stippler, and two Audi Sport Team WRT machines piloted by Marco Bonanomi, Oliver Jarvis, Edward Sandstrom and Christopher Haase, Christopher Mies and Stephane Ortelli.

Official: Giles Taylor succeeds Ian Cameron as head of Rolls-Royce design

Giles TaylorBack in the day, a Rolls-Royce looked pretty much the same as a Bentley, but with a different grille. Once BMW took over Rolls-Royce, however, it was faced with the challenge of visually separating itself from its former sister brand. And most would agree that it did so pretty well. But its cars have looked pretty much the same ever since. What Rolls-Royce needs, then, is a bit of a design shake-up. And that's just what this latest appointment could bring.

After a baker's dozen years as design director at Rolls-Royce (and twenty years designing for the BMW Group altogether), Ian Cameron is retiring from his post. In his place, Rolls-Royce has named Giles Taylor as its new director of design. In his new capacity, Taylor will report directly to BMW Group chief designer Adrian van Hooydonk, and be responsible for all design matters related to the Rolls-Royce brand and its products.

Taylor was promoted to the role from his previous position as head of exterior design for the marque, a position he's held for barely more than a year. We'll be eagerly watching to see what the veteran British car designer has in store for the future of Rolls-Royce. In the meantime you can read the full announcement below.

Audi R8 LMS ultra to fight for World Champion's title in 2012

AUDI Motorsport
Ingolstadt, December 20, 2011

- GT1 World Championship to be held with GT3 cars in 2012
- Team WRT from Belgium is set on battling for championship
- Two new Audi R8 LMS ultra cars on the grid

Audi R8 LMS ultra audi_motorsport-111117-5982.jpgAudi R8 LMS ultra audi_motorsport-111117-5988.jpgAudi R8 LMS ultra audi_motorsport-111117-5989.jpgThe new Audi R8 LMS ultra will also be competing in the FIA GT1 World Championship next year. Two vehicles of the brand new customer sport race car will be independently fielded by Team WRT in the world's highest-caliber GT racing series.

Successful ascent: when Audi in the 2009 season initiated its customer sport program with the R8 LMS for the GT3 class, this class was one of four major GT categories. Meanwhile the GT3 is not only making its mark nationally but increasingly on an international level as well. Following the inception of a FIA European Championship for GT3 models in 2006, there will also be a FIA GT1 World Championship exclusively held for GT3 vehicles in the future. Consequently, the Audi R8 LMS ultra will be able to compete in the world's top racing class for GT vehicles and, in the 2012 season, fight for a world champion's title of its own for the first time.

"We very much welcome the decision of the FIA World Motor Sport Council on December 7th in favor of the GT3 cars," emphasizes Werner Frowein, Managing Director of quattro GmbH. "In the future, this vehicle class will not only stand for high-caliber national and European customer sport but also for the world's pinnacle in GT racing. We are delighted that Team WRT has submitted its entry for the World Championship and will be representing the colors of Audi Sport customer racing."

The squad based in Flénu, Belgium, has been fielding the Audi R8 LMS in various European championships since 2010. Only two years old, the team has celebrated some remarkable successes this season, having clinched overall victories at the Spa and the Zolder 24 Hours plus having won the Blancpain Endurance Series. "The GT1 World Championship is a wonderful new commitment for us," says a pleased Team Director Vincent Vosse. "We're facing a challenging new task which all of our team members are looking forward to."

According to the wishes of World Championship promoter SRO each team is to compete with two cars of a single vehicle model from a single brand, respectively. While in most GT3 racing series professionals and amateurs share a cockpit, only professional racers compete in the GT1 World Championship. WRT is planning to select and announce its drivers before the end of December. The details on the format of the competition will be approved by the FIA shortly. It is expected that there will be ten worldwide events, each featuring two one-hour races. A provisional race calendar has already been established.

Alonso wins thrilling European GP

Fernando Alonso, FerrariFernando Alonso came through from 11th on the grid to take a remarkable home victory in the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

The result made the Ferrari driver the first repeat winner of the incredible 2012 Formula 1 season, and also moved Alonso into the championship lead.

The latter outcome was due in large part to Sebastian Vettel retiring with a mechanical problem on his Red Bull after dominating the first half of the race, and Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren retiring late on in a collision with Pastor Maldonado’s Williams as they fought for third.

Lotus’s Romain Grosjean had looked like a victory threat as he chased Alonso, only to suffer an alternator failure, but his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen came through to claim second after a late pass on the fading Hamilton, whose incident with Maldonado then allowed Michael Schumacher to make his podium return for Mercedes in third place, chased by 19th-place qualifier Mark Webber’s Red Bull.

Vettel commanded the early stages, immediately pulling out a lead of several seconds as the pack behind took several corners to sort itself out. Front row qualifier Hamilton got away slowly, and had to fend off several attackers before establishing himself in second ahead of Grosjean, Kamui Kobayashi, Maldonado, Raikkonen, Nico Hulkenberg and the fast-starting Alonso.

During the opening stint Alonso overtook Hulkenberg and followed Raikkonen past Maldonado, then jumped Raikkonen and Kobayashi by running one lap longer before his first pitstop.

This group then came out in a long train of yet-to-stop cars, through which Alonso made much more assertive progress than his rivals.

Approaching half-distance, Vettel was leading by 20 seconds over Grosjean, who had overtaken Hamilton with a neat outside-line move on lap 10 and then pulled out a 10s gap over the McLaren, which had Alonso edging closer.

When the safety car was called out to clear debris from a clash between Jean-Eric Vergne’s Toro Rosso and Heikki Kovalainen’s Caterham, most drivers made their second and final pitstops. Hamilton’s was very slow, allowing Alonso to get up to third, and the Spaniard then went around the outside of Grosjean into the first corner at the restart to claim second.

Moments later that second place became the race lead, as Vettel’s Red Bull suddenly cut out and retired, to the world champion’s shock.

Grosjean kept Alonso under pressure and still seemed a likely winner, only for an alternator failure to halt the Lotus with 17 laps to go.

After that Alonso was able to pull clear and become the first repeat winner of the 2012 season, retaking the championship lead in the process.

Hamilton held on to second until the final two laps, when his tyres appeared to wilt. Raikkonen got past after a long battle, but when Maldonado tried to do likewise, the pair clashed, putting the McLaren in the barriers and breaking the Williams’s front wing.

That allowed Schumacher through to claim the first podium of his Formula 1 return, as fended off Webber, who made great progress through from 19th on the grid.

Both Schumacher and Webber passed the Force Indias in the closing stages, with Nico Rosberg then getting his Mercedes between Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta’s Force Indias to take sixth on the last lap.

Jenson Button had a low-key run to eighth for McLaren, ahead of Sergio Perez’s Sauber and the limping Maldonado.

The second Ferrari of Felipe Massa was delayed with damage from a collision with Kobayashi and finished a lowly 16th. Kobayashi, who had already had to change front wings once after hitting Bruno Senna’s Williams, had to retire after the incident.

For some of the race it looked like Caterham might score its first point, as solid pace and the attrition ahead allowed Vitaly Petrov to pick his way up to 10th place. But the Russian was pushed back down the order and then tangled with Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo.
