While arguably Ben had a better win record in AMA winning 3 AMA Superbike Championships to Colin's AMA 250 title both followed a very similar career path. Both went on to win a World Superbike Championship and yes I will agree that Ben's was a little more spectacular doing so in his rookie season. AMA to World Superbike to MotoGP where both rode for factory teams as the B rider.
Colin has now fallen to a struggling CRT team after having been at one point the B rider to Valentino Rossi. Ben is now struggling as the B rider to a one-time MotoGP world champion and current series point leader Jorge Lorenzo. Lorenzo, ironically, is the rider that most likely lead Valentino Rossi to leave Yamaha for Ducati. So Edwards and Spies were/are in the same position with the Yamaha team, B riders to two "aliens".
With Ben Spies lackluster performances in MotoGP is his destiny all ready mapped out? Can we look at Colin Edwards career path and quite confidently say that will be Ben's based on MotoGP performance to date? With silly season already in full swing and some teams having committed to Moto2 riders such as Honda and Marc Marquez, Crutchlow outperforming the Yamaha factory B rider on a satellite bike, Nicky Hayden possibly out at Ducati where will Ben find himself in 2013?
Sliding down the Edwards path where we will see Ben on a CRT bike like Colin or will Ben see the MotoGP writing on the wall and take the Marco Melandri, Carlos Checa, Max Biaggi path back to World Superbike? After hitting the lofty air of MotoGP would Ben ever consider returning to the US?
Sorry for the length, but thought this was worth throwing out to the group for discussion.....
